INJURY UPDATES: Arteta on why Rice went off at half-time

Declan Rice’s substitution in Tottenham’s draw with the Reds was explained by Mikel Arteta.

Declan Rice, a midfielder, was substituted at halftime of the 2-2 draw with Tottenham due to a back issue, according to Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal manager reveals Declan Rice was suffering with a back injury against Spurs on Sunday

Rice, an England international, played the first 45 minutes as Son Heung-min’s opening goal and Cristian Romero’s own goal evened the score at halftime.

Although Fabio Vieira and Jorginho were introduced from the bench, Rice did not return for the second half of the north London derby.

Declan is not feeling well; he felt something in his back and was unable to continue, and Fabio was a tactical choice, Arteta said in his post-game press conference.

“In the second half, we had to adjust to it and try.
When we immediately gave up after scoring, it was a huge blow.”.

The Gunners had reclaimed the lead early in the second when Romero was called for a handball, allowing Bukayo Saka to calmly score from the spot.
However, Jorginho was intercepted by James Maddison before Son scored his second.

In the first half, a single Gabriel Jesus opportunity could have given Arsenal a 2-0 lead, and Arteta was regretful of some of the missed chances that prevented his team from claiming all three points.

“Well especially when you go up twice, and the moments and chances that we didn’t make, especially in the first half,” he continued.

“We desired more, but in order to get the most out of it, we failed to do so.
When we had control and dominance over the game, we gave up goals, which was a huge blow.

“Playing in front of this crowd in a derby doesn’t get much better than that, and I think the players were so excited, but sometimes you can get too hyped because we lost some composure on the ball to gain more control, but we have to accept the draw because there is nothing else we can do.”.
