Robert Lewandowski will be contacted by Barcelona regarding a new contract.
With little expected change in the market, new Barcelona Sporting Director Deco won’t have an endless list of tasks to complete in the upcoming months, but the ones he does have are challenging.
Deco has raised doubts about their ability to bring in any new players during the January transfer window, including 18-year-old Brazilian forward Vitor Roque.
This could be a major setback for Xavi Hernandez’s plans.
Sport reports that he has two other priorities on his agenda, but determining whether they can fit Roque into their salary cap will be near the top of his list.
Both Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski have been renewed, with de Jong being one of them.
As long as the Dutchman continues to feel at home in Barcelona, the de Jong transaction appears challenging but eminently doable. The latter might be slightly more challenging.
Despite being under a three-year contract with a fourth-year option, Lewandowski’s current agreement provides for annual salary increases. While he continues to be Xavi’s top choice, his situation—in which he will turn 36 and become the club’s highest paid player—is far from ideal.
To keep Lewandowski under contract in the unlikely event that they decide to release him next year, Deco will attempt to offer him a new one-year contract through 2025. Lewandowski has frequently stated how content he is in Barcelona and how little Saudi Arabia appeals to him, but the Catalan daily reports that the Saudi Pro League is still very interested in the Polish striker and may make a demand next summer.
Barcelona may think about selling him for what they can get next summer depending on how well he performs this season as a possible easy out of a difficult situation.
They will also be eager to lower his salary cap because resources are scarce in Catalonia.
