In Chelsea’s most likely lineup for tonight, an academy product is benched and two seasoned starters return.

Yesterday’s press conference for Mauricio Pochettino began with inquiries concerning the team’s injury status. The Chelsea manager clarified that the starting lineup for tonight’s matchup is probably the same as it was on Saturday against Preston.

We can infer a few things about the team from that regarding the one we will see tonight.

Conor Gallagher and Thiago Silva will enter because they both had a restful weekend. That probably means Malo Gusto moves back to the right and Levi Colwill moves back to left back.

Cole Palmer is permitted to move back to the right wing, and Gallagher, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo resume their midfield positions. It appears that Armando Broja will continue to hold the top spot.

Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk will compete to play on the opposite flank as a result.

Palmer receiving a rest would be the only other possible modification, meaning Sterling and Mudryk would both play.

This is how the final squad would appear:

Petrovic; Enzo, Caicedo, Gallagher; Sterling/Mudryk, Broja, Palmer; Gusto, Disasi, Silva, Colwill.

“Advanced talks” are underway between Chelsea and Blues regarding a La Liga defender.

The January transfer window for Chelsea hasn’t started in earnest yet because the first week was dominated by loan recalls and exits rather than potential additions. That might be about to change, though, as head coach Mauricio Pochettino made hints that the hierarchy would be meeting soon to discuss the market targets.

In addition to a midfielder and defensive option, the Blues have also been linked to a striker in the upcoming weeks. There are rumors circulating that some sales might be necessary to generate money for any signings, so everyone will be watching to see which players decide to leave.

Having said that, as the Blues get ready to assemble their roster for the second half of the season, here is a look at the most recent Chelsea transfer news for the January window.

Ian Maatsen

According to Fabrizio Romano, Borussia Dortmund has formally approached Ian Maatsen, a defender for Chelsea, during the January transfer window. The Dutchman, whose current contract is expiring in just 18 months, has received a loan offer from the Bundesliga team, and negotiations are officially underway.

Only months after turning down a permanent switch from the Blues to his former loan team Burnley, the Cobham academy graduate is reportedly eager to switch.

Aitor Paredes

According to the Sun, Chelsea is interested in signing Athletic Bilbao defender Aitor Paredes in the upcoming transfer window. As the Blues look to bolster their backline options, scouts have reportedly been keeping an eye on the 23-year-old, with questions raised regarding a possible price tag.

Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher, a midfield player for Chelsea, is still a target for Tottenham before the January transfer window closes. Calciomercato, for example. The England international is reportedly admired by Ange Postecoglou, but it’s unclear if they can live up to the £50 million price tag.
