Manchester City is prepared to offer Erling Haaland compassionate leave if needed, as the striker mourns the loss of a close family friend, Ivar Eggja. The 24-year-old, along with his father and agent Rafaela Pimenta, has been grieving the death of Eggja, a key figure in Haaland’s inner circle who played a significant role in his career.
Rafaela Pimenta paid tribute to Eggja in an emotional social media post, saying, “Ever since I met you I thought your power was to cheer up every room… I thought it was a superpower, and you went through so much, with strength, dignity, tolerance, and optimism that friends and family could ever hope for.”
Pimenta continued, “It was an honor to be a small part of your journey… You will be very much missed, although I know you won’t leave us – you’re just too stubborn for that. We’ll keep hearing from you in wine toasts, inappropriate jokes, and cheering at games.”
Erling Haaland also honored Eggja in a heartfelt post, writing, “You are a legend, Ivar. Words cannot describe how much you meant to me! Words cannot describe how much you will be missed! Thank you for everything, you madman. We will see each other again. Rest in peace, Ivar.”
According to MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Manchester City has confirmed that they are willing to give Haaland time away from the team should he request it, following Eggja’s passing. Eggja had been a pivotal figure in Haaland’s life, present for his unveiling at the Etihad Stadium in 2022, and often attended significant events, including last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony. The two were so close that Haaland affectionately referred to Eggja as “uncle.”
Despite the personal loss, Haaland returned to training on Thursday with Pep Guardiola’s squad, ahead of their Premier League fixture against Brentford. While City is ready to provide him the space he needs, Haaland’s presence at training suggests he may still be available for selection this weekend.
In other squad updates, both Savinho and Phil Foden have rejoined City’s training sessions. Savinho had missed the win over West Ham due to a knee injury, while Foden, absent since the opening day of the season, recently pulled out of England’s squad due to illness but is now recovering.
Manchester City fans will be watching closely to see if Haaland takes compassionate leave, but the club’s willingness to support their star player during this difficult time speaks volumes about the relationship between Haaland and City.
