Rodri’s season has come to an abrupt end following knee surgery, leaving Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola scrambling to fill the critical defensive midfield role that the Spaniard has made his own over the years. This injury not only impacts City’s midfield dynamics but also adds a layer of complexity as they head into the remainder of the season.
John Stones, however, has stepped forward, expressing his readiness to fill the void left by Rodri. While City tried to deploy Rico Lewis in the role against Newcastle, it didn’t quite pay off. With a Champions League clash against Slovan Bratislava on the horizon, Stones has made it clear that he’s willing and eager to step up, having previously excelled in a similar position.
Reflecting on Rodri’s influence, Stones shared his thoughts: “It was tough news for all of us. I’ve spoken to him, and he’s doing well and recovering. The standard he’s set over the past few seasons is unreal. But we have depth, and I believe in the quality of the players we have who can step into that role.”
Stones also opened up about his experience in the defensive midfield role: “I love it. It gives you a completely different perspective on the game. You gain an appreciation for the work players do in that position. It helps me understand when to receive the ball and when to move it on.”
He continued, emphasizing his dedication to improving: “Every time I step into that role, I try to learn and get better. The gaffer trusts us to show our qualities, and it’s about going out there and doing the job.”
Looking ahead, Manchester City is heavily favored in their match against Slovan Bratislava, especially after the Slovakian team suffered a 5-0 defeat to Celtic. However, Guardiola is approaching the game with caution, refusing to take anything for granted, especially in the unpredictable landscape of the Champions League. Though still without star player Kevin De Bruyne, City’s confidence is bolstered by the return of Phil Foden, who has been out for much of the season due to illness and injury.
Guardiola praised Foden’s return: “I’ve learned in my career to never underestimate any opponent. Bratislava played with courage. But I can say this—Phil Foden is back. He was the best player in the Premier League last season, and we need him. The way he trains, his passion—he’s going to help us in a big way.”
As City prepare for their European test, the spotlight shifts to how Guardiola will navigate Rodri’s absence and whether Stones or another player will rise to the challenge.
