This Gamecock Linebacker is DESPERATE to Return!

Live from Columbia: Bam Martin-Scott Faces Uncertainty Over Eligibility Extension

South Carolina linebacker Bam Martin-Scott, a standout on the Gamecocks’ defense, finds himself at a crossroads as he seeks a final year of college eligibility. Martin-Scott, who began his collegiate career at Dodge City Community College in Kansas, has exhausted his eligibility under current NCAA rules after playing two years at the JUCO level and three seasons at South Carolina.

However, there may still be hope for Martin-Scott to don the Garnet and Black for another season.

A Precedent Set by Diego Pavia

The eligibility issue gained national attention earlier this year when Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia successfully challenged the NCAA’s rules. Pavia filed a lawsuit arguing that his JUCO years (starting in 2020) prevented him from earning NIL money, a right granted to college athletes beginning in 2021.

A court granted Pavia a temporary injunction, allowing him to play another season. This decision could open the door for other student-athletes in similar situations, including Martin-Scott.

Key Differences in Martin-Scott’s Case

While Pavia’s victory sets a promising precedent, Martin-Scott’s situation has a crucial distinction. He began his JUCO career in 2019, a year before Pavia. This timeline difference could complicate his case and make it less likely for him to benefit from the same ruling.

During a Friday press conference, Martin-Scott shared his thoughts on the ongoing process.

“We don’t know yet because my case is a little different than Pavia’s with me being older,” Martin-Scott explained. “Still going through the process. I would love to come back. I love this program. Like the trajectory it’s going on. I would love to come back.”

A Stellar 2024 Season

Regardless of the NCAA’s decision, Martin-Scott has made the most of his time at South Carolina. After redshirting in 2021, the Indiana native has improved every season, culminating in a stellar 2024 campaign.

This year, Martin-Scott recorded 65 total tackles, including 39 solo stops, nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two passes defended. His performance has solidified his reputation as a cornerstone of the Gamecocks’ defense.

One Last Ride?

If Martin-Scott’s eligibility extension is denied, his final appearance in a South Carolina uniform will come on December 31, 2024, in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against No. 20 Illinois. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. EST on ABC.

As the Gamecocks prepare for their bowl matchup, fans and teammates alike will be watching closely, hoping for clarity on Martin-Scott’s future. Whether his journey continues in Columbia or elsewhere, one thing is certain: his contributions to the program have left an indelible mark.

Stay tuned for updates on Martin-Scott’s eligibility and coverage of the Citrus Bowl.
