Live Update: Seth Strickland Named Offensive Coordinator at Charleston Southern
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Former South Carolina quarterback Seth Strickland has been appointed as the new offensive coordinator for Charleston Southern University, the school announced Sunday.
Strickland brings a wealth of experience to the Buccaneers after spending the last two seasons in the same role at Division II Anderson University, where he was part of Bobby Lamb’s inaugural coaching staff.
From Gamecock Player to Coaching Visionary
Strickland’s football journey began as a quarterback for Steve Spurrier at South Carolina from 2009 to 2012. While he primarily contributed as a scout team player early on, he took on a critical role as the Gamecocks’ placeholder from 2010 to 2012.
During his senior season in 2012, Strickland showcased his skills under center, completing 4 of 6 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.
The Laurens native later transitioned into coaching, spending six seasons with the Gamecocks under Spurrier and Will Muschamp in various roles, including serving as interim tight ends coach during the 2018 Outback Bowl.
Strickland also worked alongside Spurrier in the Alliance of American Football as the quarterbacks coach for the Orlando Apollos.
Charleston Southern head coach Gabe Giardina highlighted the significance of Strickland’s experience, stating, “Seth’s experience under Coach Spurrier, both as a player and on his staff, will be valuable for us in the development of our offensive system for the 2024 season.”
Coaching Journey and Offensive Expertise
Strickland’s coaching résumé extends beyond South Carolina. He previously held positions at IMG Academy and worked with Giardina as the quarterbacks coach, recruiting coordinator, and pass game coordinator at Albany State in 2021.
The Buccaneers are looking to rebound after a challenging 1-11 season in 2024, with their sole victory coming in an upset against ranked Furman during Week 2. Giardina’s first year in 2023 saw the team post a 4-7 record.
Another Gamecock Joins the Staff
In addition to Strickland, Landon Martin has been named Charleston Southern’s new offensive line coach. Martin, like Strickland, has ties to South Carolina, starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 2016. He later spent five seasons with the Gamecocks as an offensive analyst and assistant offensive line coach.
Most recently, Martin served at Newberry College from 2021 to 2023 and was part of the staff at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee.
Building for the Future
With Strickland and Martin now on board, Charleston Southern is doubling down on its efforts to revitalize the program. Both bring a strong pedigree and deep ties to South Carolina football, setting the stage for what could be a transformative 2024 season for the Buccaneers.
