“8 Texas Freshmen Who Could Take College Football by Storm in 2025!”

Texas Longhorns Dominate Recruiting Rankings – These 8 Freshmen Could Make an Immediate Impact

The Texas Longhorns are officially the top recruiting class in the nation! In the latest On3 Sports 2025 Team Recruiting Rankings, Texas takes the No. 1 spot, further solidifying Steve Sarkisian’s powerhouse program.

Texas’ Recruiting Class is Stacked

The Longhorns have put together one of the most loaded recruiting classes in the country, with six players rated as five-star prospects by at least one of the major recruiting services (ESPN, 247Sports, Rivals, On3 Sports). Additionally, 11 Texas signees rank in the Top 100 of the On3 consensus industry rankings.

With key departures at quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive line, and defensive back, Texas will rely on fresh talent to step up quickly. Fortunately, Sarkisian has a proven track record of helping freshmen make an instant impact—just ask Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who exploded onto the scene in his freshman year with 62 catches, 981 yards, and 12 touchdowns.

On the defensive side, Anthony Hill Jr. and Colin Simmons became two of Texas’ most dominant players as underclassmen, proving that elite freshmen can thrive in Austin.

So, which 2025 recruits are set to make noise right away? Here are eight names to watch this fall.

1. Kaliq Lockett – Wide Receiver

Big-play potential from Day 1

The wide receiver position is one of the easiest for freshmen to break out at, and Kaliq Lockett has all the tools to do just that. Ranked as a Top 30 prospect by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals, Lockett has elite speed, route-running, and hands, making him a potential go-to target early on.

With Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, and Silas Bolden off to the NFL, Texas needs fresh faces to step up, and Lockett could be one of them.

2. Lance Jackson – Edge Rusher

Texas’ next dominant pass rusher?

Standing 6-foot-5, 270 pounds, Lance Jackson is already built like an SEC pass rusher. On3 Sports ranks him as the No. 5 player in the country, and Director of Scouting Charles Power put it simply:

“Normal human beings are not supposed to be able to move this way.”

With Anthony Hill Jr. recording 5.5 sacks as a freshman and Colin Simmons tallying nine sacks in 2024, Jackson could be next in line to become a disruptive force off the edge.

3. Jonah Williams – Safety

Versatile defensive weapon ready to contribute

Texas is already stacked at safety with All-American Michael Taaffe, Derek Williams Jr., and Jelani McDonald. But that won’t stop Jonah Williams from seeing the field.

Thanks to his size, speed, and ability to play multiple positions, Williams could rotate in frequently and even line up as a third-and-long pass rusher alongside stars like Anthony Hill Jr., Colin Simmons, Trey Moore, Ethan Burke, and Lance Jackson.

4. Justus Terry – Defensive Tackle

A nightmare for SEC offensive lines

At 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, Justus Terry brings a unique blend of strength, quickness, and agility to Texas’ defensive line. With Vernon Broughton and Alfred Collins departing, Terry could fill a major role immediately.

He may not be the traditional big-bodied defensive tackle, but his explosiveness off the line could make him a serious problem for opposing offenses.

5. Michael Terry III – Wide Receiver

A physically dominant target in the passing game

Texas will need bigger, faster receivers to step up, and Michael Terry III fits the bill. At 6-foot-3 with elite speed, Terry is arguably the most physically ready receiver in Texas’ 2025 class.

Much like Ryan Wingo, who flashed his potential as a freshman, Terry has the size-speed combination to be an instant mismatch for defenses.

6. Jaime Ffrench – Wide Receiver

Texas’ hidden gem at WR?

One of the most underrated receivers in the class, Jaime Ffrench is an absolute matchup nightmare. His ability to separate downfield and make defenders miss after the catch gives him star potential in the Longhorns’ offense.

Don’t be surprised if Ffrench emerges as a go-to target by midseason.

7. Kade Phillips – Cornerback

A rare five-star talent in the secondary

Elite five-star cornerbacks don’t come around often, but Texas landed one in Kade Phillips. Ranked No. 21 by 247Sports and No. 23 by On3 Sports, Phillips has both the ball skills and hustle to be an instant playmaker.

With Thorpe Award winner Jahdae Barron departing, Phillips could step into a key role in 2025.

8. Elijah Barnes – Linebacker

The next defensive enforcer in Austin

Adding Elijah Barnes to a linebacker room featuring Anthony Hill Jr. and Liona Lefau should have Texas fans excited. At 230 pounds with elite speed and instincts, Barnes isn’t afraid of contact and could free up Hill to make even more big plays.

Barnes has the football IQ and physicality to contribute from day one.

Texas’ Future Looks Bright

With the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, the Longhorns are reloading with elite talent across the board. Steve Sarkisian’s squad will have youth in key positions, but given Texas’ history of developing freshmen into stars, don’t be surprised if these names become household ones by season’s end.

The 2025 Texas Longhorns are shaping up to be a must-watch team—and these eight players might be the ones leading the charge.
