Even with the 2025–26 campaign still unfolding, and the program already have clarity on two major reinforcements for next season — and that’s significant for the long-term outlook in Columbia.
Two Frontcourt Anchors Set to Return
Staley confirmed Wednesday that forward will return for her final season of eligibility in 2026–27 after missing the entire 2025–26 year due to an ACL tear suffered just before the season tipped off.
“Chloe will come back next year,” Staley said.
While the announcement formalizes what many expected, its impact shouldn’t be understated. Kitts’ absence this season forced South Carolina to adjust its frontcourt rotations, rebounding schemes and interior scoring balance. Her versatility — the ability to score facing the basket, rebound in traffic and defend multiple positions — makes her one of the more complete forwards in the program.

Her eventual return was never considered doubtful. In January, her father, Jason Kitts, told WACH Fox’s Matt Dowell — later confirming to The State — that her rehabilitation was progressing smoothly and that she fully intended to return. That steady recovery timeline now aligns with Staley’s public confirmation.
From a basketball standpoint, this gives South Carolina something invaluable: proven experience returning to a roster that continues to reload with elite recruiting classes. Kitts won’t just be “another player” coming off injury — she’ll be a veteran presence capable of stabilizing younger lineups in high-pressure SEC and NCAA Tournament moments.
Ashlyn Watkins Also Back in the Fold
The Gamecocks are also set to regain forward , who chose to step away from competition this season while rehabbing from an ACL injury suffered in January of last year.
“Ashlyn took the year off, so she’ll come back when the year’s up,” Staley said.
Watkins was not enrolled during the season but remained committed to recovery. Her return is arguably just as important as Kitts’, particularly because of what she brings defensively. Watkins’ length, rim protection and transition athleticism fit perfectly within Staley’s defensive identity — one built on disrupting passing lanes, controlling the glass and turning stops into quick offense.
What This Means for 2026–27
The timing of both returns positions South Carolina for another potential championship-caliber run next season. ACL recoveries are no longer career-altering the way they once were, but reintegration always requires rhythm and confidence. The fact that both players will have had extended rehab windows suggests they’ll enter 2026–27 physically prepared.
Strategically, the Gamecocks regain:
- Frontcourt depth that allows lineup flexibility.
- Defensive versatility, especially with Watkins’ rim protection.
- Veteran leadership in Kitts’ final year.
- Rebounding security, a cornerstone of Staley’s system.
While the current season still has major goals ahead, this early clarity about next year reduces offseason uncertainty. In an era where roster turnover is constant, knowing two experienced contributors are returning provides rare continuity.
For Staley, it’s about maintaining championship standards — not rebuilding, but reloading. And with both Kitts and Watkins set to return, the Gamecocks’ future frontcourt suddenly looks deep, athletic and battle-tested once again.
