A source told The State that Shaw was in “good spirits” following the incident and admitted he feels “lucky to be alive.”
Witnesses said Shaw, who turned 34 on Friday, received CPR on the field before being taken to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was admitted to the ICU, where he remained in stable condition as of Saturday morning.
Chad Smith, an Upstate resident who was coaching on a nearby field at the time, recalled the tense moments after Shaw went down.
“I heard a commotion and saw him lying flat, face down on the grass,” Smith told The State. He added that a woman frantically searched for anyone with medical training. One of the coaches on Smith’s field, a firefighter, immediately ran to help.
“As soon as that coach got over there, within a few seconds he was doing CPR,” Smith said. “That’s when it really got scary.”
Shaw and his family have not yet made a public statement regarding the incident.
