Former South Carolina baseball standout Braylen Wimmer has delivered a powerful and deeply personal update following a major medical procedure—one that tested his strength, his courage, and his resolve in ways he never imagined.
Wimmer revealed that on November 19th, he underwent an awake craniotomy at OU Health under the care of neurosurgeon Dr. Ian Dunn. In an emotional message released to fans, friends, and supporters, he confirmed that the surgery was a success and that he is now focused on recovery.
But the journey has not been easy.
“I lost my speech for a couple of days afterward. That’s why I am just now getting this out,” Wimmer shared. “Those were some of the scariest moments of my life. But I’m back on track, speaking, fighting, and ready to push forward.”
Wimmer also posted a striking selfie taken during the surgery itself, a moment he said was inspired by Ryan Sharp—a figure who has become instrumental throughout his journey. Wimmer expressed immense gratitude for Sharp and his family, describing them as “a beacon throughout this process” whose support has been invaluable.
In his statement, Wimmer poured out heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming wave of love he has received.
“To everyone who has prayed, messaged, donated, or shown love, thank you so much,” he wrote. “The support from my family, friends, teammates, the Gamecock family, the Rockies organization, and my girlfriend has carried me through some of the hardest days I’ve ever faced.”

He described the emotional weight of the experience, recalling a moment with his girlfriend when she asked, “Why you?” To which he responded with unwavering determination: “I was chosen to fight.”
Calling the past month the hardest of his life, Wimmer acknowledged that the road ahead will be long and challenging. Still, his message radiated strength, resilience, and an unshakeable belief in his future.
“But I will not quit,” he vowed. “I will fight every single day to get back to my life and my dreams. One step at a time. One day at a time. I’m strong. I’m coming back. I can do this.”
The former Gamecock closed his update with a heartfelt thank-you to the community that has stood with him every step of the way:
“Thank you all for lifting me up. I can’t thank you enough. ❤️”
As he continues his recovery, the Gamecock family—and the wider baseball community—stand firmly behind him, inspired by his courage and confident in his comeback.
