“From Eli Manning to Fake Poop: LaNorris Sellers Explains Mike Shula’s Coaching Style”

QB LaNorris Sellers Shares Mike Shula’s Unusual Coaching Tool

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers offered a lighthearted glimpse into offensive coordinator Mike Shula’s teaching style—and it involves a rather unique prop.

Speaking with reporters Tuesday, Sellers explained how Shula uses what looks like fake poop during film sessions to drive home a point when quarterbacks make mistakes.

“It looks like real poop,” Sellers said. “You can sit it in your hand and it looks like poop.”

According to Sellers, whenever a quarterback blows an assignment, Shula sends him to his office to grab the prop. The player then brings it back, and Shula makes his point crystal clear.

“The player gives it to Shula, who throws it on a table and says, ‘That’s what you just did to me,’” Sellers explained.

Fortunately for Sellers, he hasn’t had to fetch the prop too often. Some of his teammates, however, have had to take part in the unconventional exercise.

Shula Taking the Reins

Shula, a former Alabama head coach and longtime NFL assistant, spent last season as South Carolina’s senior offensive assistant. This year, he’s moved into the role of play-caller for the Gamecocks.

Sellers, who’s expected to play a key role in South Carolina’s offense this fall, said his relationship with Shula has been strong.

“It’s good,” Sellers said last month at SEC Media Days. “Bringing stuff from the NFL, coach to guys like Eli Manning, to Cam Newton, two completely different players, and then using it all on me is good to use”.
