“Gamecock Fans Go Wild as Four-Star Signee Stuns as South Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year!”

South Carolina added another major talent to its future roster this week. On Wednesday, four-star safety J’Zavien Currence officially signed with the Gamecocks as part of the 2026 recruiting class. By Friday—just one day before his South Pointe Stallions face the South Florence Bruins (the former team of USC stars LaNorris and Jayden Sellers) in the SCHSL 4A state championship—Currence picked up one of the state’s most prestigious honors: Gatorade Player of the Year for South Carolina.

He becomes the first incoming Gamecock to earn the award since defensive lineman Zacch Pickens in the 2019 class.

Currence has been the driving force behind South Pointe’s exceptional season. Serving as both quarterback and a defensive back, he has helped propel the Stallions to a dominant 13-1 record heading into Saturday’s championship matchup. Their only defeat came at the hands of nationally ranked William Amos Hough out of North Carolina. Notably, South Pointe also defeated cross-town 5A powerhouse Northwestern, which is competing for a state title of its own this weekend.

As the team’s offensive leader and top defensive playmaker, Currence has been at the center of their success.

According to MaxPreps, Currence has amassed more than 4,200 yards of total offense this season and has been responsible for 42 touchdowns, averaging roughly 300 yards and three scores per game.

Although he has spent most of his time at quarterback and safety, the versatile athlete has also lined up at wide receiver, cornerback, and linebacker. His experience in the secondary includes both man and zone coverage, whether operating in the slot or outside. That versatility fits well with the style of South Carolina defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, who frequently moves his safeties around the field.

South Pointe’s roster is loaded with future college talent. Alongside Currence is fellow 2026 South Carolina commit Anthony Baxter, a three-star offensive lineman, and 2027 defensive line target Seth Tillman, a four-star prospect. The Stallions have a rich history with USC as well—program legends Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, and DeVonte Holloman all came through South Pointe.
