South Carolina Freshman Jayden Sellers Ruled Out vs. Ole Miss, Beamer Provides Injury Update
South Carolina freshman wide receiver Jayden Sellers will miss Saturday’s matchup against Ole Miss after appearing on Wednesday’s SEC availability report as doubtful. The same goes for Buddy Mack III, one of the Gamecocks’ key special teams contributors — both players have officially been ruled out for the weekend.
Head coach Shane Beamer confirmed the update during his Thursday night call-in show, clarifying that Sellers’ injury isn’t long-term.
“Jayden will not play this weekend,” Beamer said. “It’s not long-term. I would expect him back for Texas A&M here in a couple of weeks. He won’t be available this week. Buddy Mack won’t be available this week, one of our core special teams players. But Moe is back, thankfully. And Nolan Hay is available, also, if needed.”
The good news for the Gamecocks: tight end Maurice Brown II, who exited the Alabama game with an injury, is expected to return against the Rebels.
Sellers had been building momentum before the setback, emerging as one of South Carolina’s most promising young offensive weapons. He led the team in receiving against Oklahoma two weeks ago and started versus Alabama, totaling nine receptions for 95 yards this season.
The SEC’s new player availability system, introduced last season, requires schools to release reports three days before football games, with updates each day leading to a final status report 90 minutes before kickoff. Player designations range from available and probable to doubtful or out, similar to the NFL model.
The Gamecocks (___) face Ole Miss at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at Vaught Hemingway Stadium, with ESPN broadcasting the action. Another official availability report will be released Friday evening around 8:10 p.m. ET.
