Todd McShay Sounds Off on LaNorris Sellers’ Future — and Issues Warning to Shane Beamer About Miami
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers could be facing one of the biggest decisions of his career when this season wraps up. Now in his third year with the Gamecocks, the redshirt sophomore has several possible paths ahead: he could declare for the 2026 NFL Draft, return to South Carolina for another year of development, or even transfer to another program.
With three regular-season games remaining and South Carolina still fighting for bowl eligibility, no decisions are imminent. But as the offseason nears, talk around Sellers’ future is expected to heat up quickly.
During Thursday’s episode of The McShay Show, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay shared what he’s hearing from pro scouts about Sellers’ next step — and issued a warning about a potential suitor.
“There’s a strong opinion in NFL scouting circles he will be back in school next year,” McShay said. “That he absolutely needs to for his development. … Everyone is supporting the concept that he needs another year of college. And there are people in his camp who are in agreement, is what I’m told.”
Despite flashes of elite talent this season, Sellers’ performance has been uneven at times. Still, many mock drafts continue to project him as a potential first-round pick in the future. Underclassmen have until Jan. 15 to declare for the draft, giving Sellers plenty of time to evaluate his options.
McShay also didn’t rule out a transfer scenario, noting that several top programs could make a serious run at Sellers if he enters the portal. The transfer window opens Jan. 2 and closes Jan. 16.
“There’s some programs out there lurking,” McShay said. “There is a place in South Florida where they’ve done a really nice job of hand-picking quarterbacks the last two years. They’ve seen ascensions in their game, and they have a lot of talent around that quarterback position, and they haven’t been able to take that next step.”
McShay then added a direct warning to South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer:
“Miami is a program I would be very cautious of, if I’m Shane Beamer, and the Gamecocks program — of trying to come in with an offer that is very difficult to refuse.”
The Miami Hurricanes are indeed expected to be in the market for another quarterback this offseason, as current starter Carson Beck, a Georgia transfer, will exhaust his eligibility at the end of the year.
For Beamer, keeping Sellers in Columbia will be a top offseason priority. The head coach said he speaks with his quarterback regularly — though, for now, those talks are focused on the present, not the future.
“Certainly, we’ve discussed, there’s a time and place to discuss his decisions beyond 2025,” Beamer said Sunday. “Right now, it’s helping him and the rest of our team be the best version of themselves these next three weeks. We still haven’t played our best football, and we’re still chasing that.”
So far this season, Sellers has thrown for 1,536 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions, while adding 158 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.
South Carolina is off this weekend before heading to College Station to take on No. 3 Texas A&M on Nov. 15. Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN or ABC — and as Sellers’ spotlight grows, so does the intrigue surrounding what comes next for the Gamecocks’ young star.
