The University of South Carolina made it official on Thursday, announcing the hiring of TCU assistant offensive line coach Randy Clements as the Gamecocks’ new offensive line coach.
Clements brings decades of experience to Columbia, having coached offensive lines at both powerhouse programs and mid-tier schools throughout his career. He also shares a long professional history with new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles — the two have spent a combined 12 seasons working together across four different programs.
Below is a full look at Clements’ extensive coaching background.
Early Career: Stephen F. Austin & Stephenville High (1986–2002)
- 1986–1987: Offensive Line Coach, Stephen F. Austin
- 1990–1999: Offensive Line Coach, Stephenville High School
- 2000–2002: Offensive Coordinator, Stephenville High School
Clements began his coaching path at his alma mater before moving into high school coaching, where he helped develop one of Texas’ top prep offenses.
Houston (2003–2007)
- Role: Offensive Line Coach
Clements’ first major college stop came at Houston, where he worked on Art Briles’ staff — coaching Kendal Briles while he was a Cougar from 2003–2005. During this stretch, Houston consistently produced explosive offenses, including multiple top-12 national finishes between 2004–2007. He also coached seven All-CUSA linemen during his five seasons.
Notably, after the 2006 season, Houston faced South Carolina in the Liberty Bowl, putting up 527 yards even in a 44–36 loss to the Gamecocks.
Baylor (2008–2016)
- 2008–2011: OL Coach / Co-Offensive Coordinator
- 2012–2016: OL Coach / Run Game Coordinator
During his nine-year tenure in Waco, Clements helped build one of college football’s most dominant offensive eras. Baylor won two Big 12 titles, posted the nation’s No. 1 offense three straight years, and developed a long list of decorated linemen — including:
- 13 All-Big 12 selections
- Six All-Americans
- Four consecutive Big 12 Offensive Linemen of the Year (2012–2015)
He also helped coach Robert Griffin III, who won the 2011 Heisman Trophy.
Southeastern, Houston, and Florida State (2017–2019)
After a reset year at NAIA powerhouse Southeastern — where his unit produced more than 550 yards per game — Clements reunited with Kendal Briles at Houston in 2018. That team made dramatic strides, jumping to 512 yards and 43.9 points per game, powered by D’Eriq King’s nearly 3,700 total yards and 50 touchdowns.
At Florida State in 2019, he helped improve an offense that had been near the bottom of the Power Five the previous year, despite challenging circumstances.
Ole Miss, North Texas, North Carolina, and TCU (2020–2025)
Clements joined Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss in 2020 and helped engineer a record-breaking offense, including 708 yards and 56 points against South Carolina and an SEC record 562.4 yards per game in conference play.
A brief analyst stint at North Texas in 2021 turned into a full-time coaching role the following year, where his offensive line units ranked top-10 nationally in sacks allowed.
At North Carolina, he helped produce back-to-back monster seasons from star running back Omarion Hampton, who rushed for more than 3,100 yards across 2023 and 2024. His UNC lines also produced three All-ACC selections during a top-10 offensive season in 2023.
Most recently at TCU in 2025, Clements assisted a unit that supported a strong passing attack, with quarterback Josh Hoover throwing for almost 3,500 yards despite a limited run game.
Clements in Columbia
Now in South Carolina, Clements reunites with Kendal Briles at a pivotal moment for the Gamecocks offense. With a deep résumé and a track record of developing elite offensive lines, Clements arrives ready to help overhaul one of USC’s most troubled units.
He’s already made his feelings clear after landing in Columbia, telling GamecockCentral:
“What’s not to be excited about being in Columbia?”
