AUBURN, Ala. — South Carolina women’s basketball sustained a potential setback during its 81-51 victory over Auburn on Wednesday night, as freshman guard Agot Makeer exited early and didn’t return to action.
Making her second consecutive start for the third-ranked Gamecocks (20-2, 6-1 SEC), Makeer checked out at the 6:18 mark of the opening quarter and remained sidelined for the remainder of the contest.
Head coach Dawn Staley offered limited details following the win, citing pain as the reason for Makeer’s absence.
“No (status update), she’s in pain and that’s a bummer but we’ll get her back home and get her checked out,” Staley said.
Makeer was absent from the bench when the first quarter concluded. However, she returned to the sideline shortly into the second quarter wearing what appeared to be a wrap or heating pad on her thigh or hip area while remaining in uniform.
Prior to her exit, Makeer converted a transition layup and subsequent free throw with 8:58 remaining in the first quarter after being fouled. She continued playing until Auburn (13-8, 2-5) called timeout, though sophomore guard Maddy McDaniel had been stationed at the scorer’s table awaiting substitution for approximately a minute beforehand.

Makeer’s brief four-minute appearance yielded just those three points. The freshman has been a steady contributor this season, entering the game with averages of 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest.
The Gamecocks will have additional time to evaluate Makeer’s condition before their next matchup. South Carolina travels to face Texas A&M on Feb. 2, providing an extra day of rest and recovery for the injured guard.
The SEC’s official injury report will be released prior to that game and updated one hour before the 8 p.m. ET tipoff in College Station, offering further clarity on Makeer’s status.
