Former South Carolina running back Mike Davis pulled no punches when reflecting on his relationship with legendary head coach Steve Spurrier.
On episode #278 of Raw Room (“Gas Pedal”), Davis joined Carolina Panthers assistant coach Daren Bates, NFL cornerback Jalen Collins, former Eagles and Chargers lineman King Dunlap, and two-time Rec League champion Alex Sweet. When the conversation turned to the “Ole Ball Coach,” Davis was blunt.
“You playing for Steve Spurrier? Tell us how you feel,” one host asked. Davis didn’t hesitate: “Yeah, tell us how you feel… I hated him, like the way he treated people.”
Spurrier’s Intense Coaching Style
Davis recalled Spurrier as an intimidating figure who instilled fear across the program. “Folks was scared of him. Coaches was scared of him, too… like, he could be wrong and they’re the cretin. I’m just sitting there like, ain’t nobody gonna say nothing,” Davis said.

Although Davis respected Spurrier’s résumé, he admitted that the coach’s approach left a lasting negative mark. One moment in particular shaped his feelings. Early in his career, Spurrier called him into the office.
“I thought it was gonna be something good… I’m doing good, going to class,” Davis said. Instead, Spurrier compared him unfavorably to star running back Marcus Lattimore.

“I’m sorry, I ain’t no disrespect, but I’m me, coach,” Davis responded. “I can’t be off the field like how Lat was. All I know is to be me… that’s what kind of started it. I really don’t like this man. I hated him.”
A Complicated Legacy
Davis’s candid words shed light on the tension between Spurrier’s demanding style and the players under him. While Spurrier is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame and revered for building South Carolina’s best football era, Davis’s story underscores how even great programs can leave players with difficult memories.
