Shane Beamer Shares Update on South Carolina DL Coach Travian Robertson After Serious Car Crash

South Carolina football head coach Shane Beamer offered a heartfelt update on the condition of defensive line coach Travian Robertson, who was involved in a tragic car crash early Friday morning.

According to the S.C. Highway Patrol, Robertson was driving his 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on U.S. 76 when a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder traveling the same direction crossed over the center line and collided with his vehicle head-on. The driver of the Pathfinder, identified as Kelly Johnson, a 35-year-old Columbia resident, died at the scene.

Robertson was rushed to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, where he was admitted to the trauma ICU. As of Wednesday morning, a source close to the situation told The State that Robertson remained hospitalized and was still recovering.

Beamer, speaking to reporters Wednesday, emphasized just how fortunate Robertson was to survive the wreck.
Truthfully, he’s very lucky to be alive,” Beamer said. “(We ask) for continued thoughts and prayers for he and his family. But he is going to be OK. It’s nothing long term. It’s just physically, he’s not able to be down on the sidelines at a game right now.”

The head coach confirmed that Robertson will not be with the team when the Gamecocks open their 2025 season this Sunday in Atlanta against Virginia Tech. Instead, assistant defensive line coach Jordan Dove, who was promoted from graduate assistant earlier this year, will handle Robertson’s gameday duties.

Beamer made clear, however, that Robertson’s absence is only temporary.
He had some pretty serious stuff happen to him in that wreck,” Beamer explained. “He will be back soon. He’s eager to get back out here and will be as soon as possible.

Robertson, a former South Carolina standout defensive lineman himself, is in his second year coaching the Gamecocks’ defensive front. His passion for the program and strong connection with his players have made him a valued member of Beamer’s staff.

While the Gamecocks prepare for a high-profile season opener, the program’s focus also remains on Robertson’s health and recovery. Beamer closed his remarks by once again urging fans and the broader football community to keep Robertson and his family in their prayer
