Signs, Omens, and Superstitions: The Stars May Be Aligning for South Carolina Again

PHOENIX — For the analytically minded, Sunday’s national championship game comes down to defensive matchups, shooting percentages, and who executes their game plan for forty minutes. For everyone else, there are signs. And right now, the signs are pointing in a very specific direction.

The SEC Tournament Loss That Predicts a Title

South Carolina lost to Texas in the SEC Tournament championship game this year. That stings — but history suggests it might not matter in the slightest.

The last time the Gamecocks lost a conference tournament final was 2022, when Kentucky beat them. South Carolina won the national championship that year. If the pattern holds, losing the SEC Tournament may have been the best thing that happened to this program in March.

The Double-Digit Seed Omen

Virginia reached the Sweet 16 this year as a ten seed. That is notable because the last time a double-digit seed made it that far was 2022 — when both tenth-seeded Creighton and tenth-seeded South Dakota advanced to the second weekend. That year, the Gamecocks dispatched Creighton in a blowout on their way to the championship.

If double-digit seeds reaching the Sweet 16 is a harbinger of South Carolina titles, consider this omen activated.

California Courts and Championship Memories

South Carolina played tournament games in Sacramento during this year’s run. The last time the Gamecocks played a tournament game in California was 2017 — the same year they won their first national championship under Dawn Staley. That year they played in Stockton, not far from Sacramento geographically.

Same state. Same result? The superstitious among us would argue the California connection is too specific to dismiss.

Easter Sunday and the Gamecocks’ Winning Tradition

April 5 is Easter Sunday. The last time South Carolina played on Easter was in 2024, when the holiday fell on March 31 — and the Gamecocks beat Oregon State that day on the way to a national championship. Adding another layer: the last time South Carolina played specifically on April 5 was also 2024, when they beat NC State on that date in the same championship run.

Easter. April 5. South Carolina wins. The calendar appears to be on their side.

The Big Ten Final Four Repeat Pattern

In 2024, South Carolina faced a Big Ten program making its second consecutive Final Four appearance — and won the national championship. This year, UCLA is a Big Ten program making its second consecutive Final Four appearance.

The parallel is precise enough to be uncomfortable for Bruins fans.

The Point Guard and Transfer Patterns

The roster history adds two more data points for the superstitious.

The last time South Carolina started a senior point guard in the national championship game was 2022. They won. Raven Johnson is a senior point guard starting in Sunday’s game.

The last time South Carolina started a senior transfer in her first season at South Carolina at the two guard was 2024 — when that player helped them win the national championship. Ta’Niya Latson is a senior transfer in her first season at South Carolina starting at the two guard on Sunday.

Both patterns, simultaneously, in the same game.

The First-Timer Warning

Here is the one piece of evidence that cuts against the grain. Since 2000, only Maryland in 2006 and Texas A&M in 2011 have won the national championship in their first-ever title game appearance. Every other first-time finalist has gone home without the trophy.

UCLA is making its first national championship game appearance on Sunday.

History strongly suggests first-timers lose. The data from the past quarter century backs it up with only two exceptions.

The Verdict

No combination of historical patterns, calendar coincidences, or roster parallels actually determines the outcome of a basketball game. Dawn Staley knows that. Cori Close knows that. The players certainly know that.

But if you are the type of person who finds meaning in the convergence of signs — the SEC Tournament loss, the California connection, Easter Sunday, the Big Ten repeat, the senior point guard, the first-year transfer — then Sunday’s alignment is as favorable for South Carolina as any championship matchup in recent memory.

The ball tips at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. The Gamecocks have history, momentum, and apparently the cosmos on their side.

Whether that is enough, we find out in Phoenix.
