“They Weren’t Done Yet: “HBCU Shocks College Basketball by Adding Big Ten Powerhouse to Brutal Schedule”

Coppin State Women’s Basketball Loads Up with Powerhouse Schedule Under New Head Coach Darrell Mosley

Coppin State women’s basketball isn’t shying away from the spotlight. After recently announcing marquee matchups with South Carolina and Tennessee, the Eagles have added another heavyweight to their 2025-26 slate: Ohio State.

Head coach Darrell Mosley confirmed that Coppin will face the Buckeyes on November 9 at Value City Arena in Columbus, marking the program’s first-ever meeting with the Big Ten power. The Eagles also locked in a road trip to SMU on December 10, further solidifying what’s quickly becoming one of the most ambitious schedules in HBCU women’s basketball.

Taking on the Giants

Coppin’s schedule is stacked with some of the most recognizable names in women’s college basketball. They’ll open against Big Ten champion Ohio State on November 9, head to Knoxville on November 23 to play eight-time national champion Tennessee, then return home to host 2024 national champion South Carolina on January 18. The SMU matchup in Dallas rounds out the gauntlet.

Ohio State, coming off a 26-7 campaign and a trip to the NCAA Tournament’s second round, brings back a loaded roster led by Jaloni Cambridge, a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selection and Co-Freshman of the Year. Veteran guard Chance Gray, who has already scored over 1,000 career points, also returns, while Boston College transfer T’yana Todd adds elite perimeter shooting.

For Coppin, the challenge couldn’t be bigger—but that’s the point.

Not Afraid of the Stage

This isn’t the first time Coppin State has leaned into marquee matchups. In 2022, the Eagles hosted Angel Reese and LSU, giving Baltimore fans a front-row seat to the eventual national champions. That willingness to go head-to-head with the sport’s elite has become a signature for the program.

Now, under new leadership, Coppin is embracing that identity more than ever.

A New Era Under Mosley

The 2025 season marks the start of the Darrell Mosley era at Coppin State, following the departure of longtime head coach Jermaine Woods. A Chester, PA native, Mosley brings 15 years of coaching experience, including the past three seasons at Arizona State, where he served as associate head coach.

Previously, Mosley turned Lincoln (Pa.) into a consistent contender in the CIAA, earning a reputation as a program-builder. Coppin State athletic director Derek Carter praised the hire, calling Mosley “a leader ready to take Coppin to new heights.” Mosley himself set the tone, promising to build “a culture of excellence both on and off the court.”

And his first schedule proves he means business.

More Than Just Games

For HBCU women’s basketball, these high-profile matchups are about more than wins and losses. They provide exposure, strengthen recruiting, and show that programs like Coppin State are unafraid to test themselves against the best in the nation.

Facing South Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio State in Year One of a new coaching era is as bold as it gets. Win or lose, the Eagles will step onto the court with some of the deepest and most talented rosters in women’s basketball—and that visibility is invaluable.

With Mosley leading the charge, Coppin State is swinging harder than ever.
