“Top 10 Transfer Portal Ranking: Former Four-Star Tight End Michael Smith Enters Transfer Portal After Limited Role at South Carolina”

South Carolina tight end Michael Smith has officially left the Gamecock football program, entering the transfer portal with plans to redshirt and continue his career elsewhere. His decision follows what sources describe as a smaller-than-expected role in the Gamecocks’ 2025 offensive scheme.

Across two seasons in Columbia, Smith totaled 12 receptions for 126 yards and one touchdown. His lone score came in a crucial moment against Missouri in 2024, but this fall, his production dipped — just two catches for 20 yards in four games before his exit.

Smith arrived at South Carolina as one of the most highly rated tight end recruits in program history, a four-star prospect with major expectations. Now, after limited opportunities, he’ll seek a fresh start as a redshirt sophomore in 2026.

According to early On3 transfer portal rankings, Smith is already a hot name on the market, listed as the No. 6 overall transfer prospect and the top-rated transfer tight end. Among those ranked above him, three are coming from programs that have experienced head coaching changes this fall. On3 currently rates Smith as a three-star transfer prospect.

As of now, no other South Carolina player has announced an intent to transfer, making Smith the only Gamecock to appear on On3’s early list.

His departure leaves a notable gap in the tight end room heading into next season. Jordan Dingle, the transfer from Kentucky, will graduate, while Brady Hunt could apply for a medical redshirt to gain a sixth year of eligibility. That leaves Maurice Brown and true freshman Mike Tyler as the most likely returnees.

The Gamecocks do have help on the way — Rivals four-star tight end Caden Ramsey, who committed in September, is expected to join the team as part of the 2026 recruiting class.

As Smith moves on, South Carolina will once again look to reload and reshape its tight end group, with Shane Beamer and his staff already evaluating options in both recruiting and the transfer portal.
