WATCH: Connor Shaw Opens Up on Cardiac Arrest Scare — Launches ‘Heart Huddle’ to Save Lives Across South Carolina

Former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw has shared an emotional update about the frightening medical emergency that nearly claimed his life — and the inspiring mission it sparked.

In a heartfelt video that quickly went viral, Shaw, 33, revealed that he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest last month while coaching his son’s youth football game in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

The terrifying moment happened on September 17, just 15 minutes into the game at Gracely Park. Shaw collapsed on the sideline, leaving those around him in shock. Fortunately, an off-duty firefighter and a police officer jumped into action, performing CPR for five minutes until an automated external defibrillator (AED) arrived on the scene.

Their quick thinking and courage saved his life.

“It’s easy to get discouraged by the state of the world, and I’ve been reminded firsthand just how much good there is,” Shaw said. “There are courageous, and bold, and kind, and selfless people who step up without hesitation.”

Now, Shaw is turning his near-death experience into a mission to protect others. He announced the launch of “The Heart Huddle,” a statewide initiative that will raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and fund the placement of AEDs at recreational facilities, youth sports fields, and middle schools throughout South Carolina.

The initiative will also promote CPR training to ensure that more people are prepared to respond when emergencies strike.

Shaw’s story is not just one of survival — it’s one of purpose. A beloved figure in Gamecock history, Shaw starred for South Carolina from 2011 to 2013, finishing his career with 6,074 passing yards, 1,683 rushing yards, and an impressive 27–5 record as a starter, the best in program history.

He was inducted into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021, and now, his leadership continues off the field.

Through The Heart Huddle, Shaw hopes to ensure that no family has to experience the same terrifying moment without help nearby.

“I was given a second chance,” Shaw said. “Now it’s my mission to make sure others get that same chance too.”
