“South Carolina’s Commits Shake Up the Rankings—See Where They Stand After Latest Update!”

South Carolina Makes the Cut! Top 2026 DB Darrell Carey Names Gamecocks in Final Five

Darrell Carey, a standout defensive back from DeMatha Catholic, has narrowed his college choices to five programs, and South Carolina football is still in the mix. The Hyattsville, Maryland native revealed his top contenders on Thursday evening, naming the Gamecocks, Maryland Terrapins, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon Ducks, and Texas A&M Aggies.

Carey’s Recruiting Profile

Though On3 has yet to rank Carey, both Rivals and ESPN consider him a 3-star prospect in the class of 2026. South Carolina was one of the first major programs to offer him, extending an offer in May 2024. Now, he holds 12 scholarship offers from Power Five programs.

Currently, Penn State is seen as the favorite, but South Carolina has a connection that could work in its favor. Gamecock offensive lineman Tree Babalade, a former DeMatha Catholic standout, is part of a growing group of DMV-area players who have committed to Shane Beamer’s program. Carey has already scheduled official visits to Penn State and Maryland in June, with more potential visits on the horizon.

Carey’s Playing Style and Versatility

At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Carey is a rangy, instinctive safety who excels both in coverage and run support. He has the speed to keep up with receivers but truly stands out with his football IQ and physicality. When the ball is in the air, Carey has a knack for jumping routes and delivering hard hits that make opponents think twice before challenging him.

His versatility is another major asset. Carey has experience playing in multiple defensive roles, lining up as a deep safety, in-the-box defender, slot corner, and even in short zones out wide. Offensively, he’s also played as a wide receiver, showcasing strong ball skills and athleticism, traits that translate well to his defensive game.

What’s Next for Carey?

With Penn State leading the race but South Carolina still in contention, Carey’s upcoming official visits will play a key role in his decision. The Gamecocks’ early offer and DMV connections could give them an edge as they look to secure one of the most promising safeties in the 2026 class.
