Talia Goodman’s Message: Dawn Staley, South Carolina and Fans Receive Bad Transfer Portal News on Monday

Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks’ women’s basketball team fell just one victory shy of securing a national championship. After a remarkable season, they were defeated by Geno Auriemma, Paige Bueckers, and the UConn Huskies, with the final score standing at 82-59.

It was a heartbreaking way to end what had been a highly successful year, as the Gamecocks wrapped up the season with a 35-4 record.

Now that the NCAA Tournament has concluded and the offseason is underway, Staley and the Gamecocks are facing the challenges of the NCAA transfer portal. On Monday, they received some disappointing news.

According to a report from Talia Goodman of On3 Sports, guard MiLaysia Fulwiley has made the decision to enter the transfer portal, with a “do not contact” tag attached.

Fulwiley, who just completed her sophomore season with South Carolina, was an important contributor during the 2024-25 season. She played in 39 games, averaging 18.9 minutes per contest. Over the course of the season, Fulwiley posted averages of 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, while shooting 42.6% from the field and 25.8% from beyond the arc.

A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Fulwiley chose to stay close to home after high school. She enjoyed a strong freshman season as well, where she averaged 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, with shooting percentages of 43.8% from the floor and 34.3% from three-point range.

With her talents, Fulwiley is expected to attract significant interest from several teams in the transfer portal. For Staley and the Gamecocks, however, her departure is a tough blow.
