Kamilla Cardoso Responds to Opposing Player’s Comments While on Temporary Leave

Kamilla Cardoso Shines as Brazil Stays Unbeaten at FIBA Women’s AmeriCup

Brazil continued its dominant form at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile, cruising past the Dominican Republic with a convincing 73–46 victory in their Group A matchup.

The Brazilians came out firing, dropping 31 points in the first quarter to set the tone early. Although the Dominican Republic rallied in the third quarter — edging Brazil 20–18 — the early lead proved insurmountable as Brazil remained in full control from start to finish.

With the outcome largely sealed early, Kamilla Cardoso played limited minutes, logging 12:25 on the floor. In that time, she contributed six points, four rebounds, and two blocks, continuing to make her presence felt on both ends of the court.

After the game, Giocelis Reynoso of the Dominican Republic took to Instagram to praise Cardoso, writing in her story:

“Such a talented and great player 🫡 @kamilla_cardoso. Like I said… today was fun 💯.”

Cardoso responded by reposting the message with a warm reply:

“Thanks, I’m trynna be like you!! 😊.”

A Star on the Rise — International and Domestic

This AmeriCup marks Cardoso’s third appearance for Brazil on the continental stage. Her résumé already includes a gold medal and tournament MVP honors from the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, along with a pivotal role in Brazil’s 2022 South American Championship title.

On Tuesday, Cardoso added another milestone to her international career, becoming the second-highest shot blocker in AmeriCup history since 2003.

Her rise hasn’t been limited to international play. Since being selected third overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Cardoso has quickly become a force for the Chicago Sky. She’s averaging 12.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and nearly one block per game (0.8) in her rookie campaign, all while shooting a highly efficient 56.1% from the field.

Among her standout performances this season was a career-high 27-point game against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 24, where she showcased her full offensive arsenal.

What’s Next

With Brazil now undefeated in Group A, their next test comes against El Salvador on Wednesday. The team is aiming to carry its momentum into the knockout stages, which begin Friday and culminate with the championship game on Sunday.

Once her AmeriCup duties are complete, Cardoso will rejoin the Sky, who currently sit at 5–11 and are looking to turn their season around in the second half.

From Santiago to Chicago, Kamilla Cardoso continues to prove she’s one of the brightest rising stars in women’s basketball — on any stage.
