The 89th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is officially set for December 20, with several South Carolina Gamecock commitments set to represent in one of the region’s premier all-star showcases. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Viking Stadium on the campus of Spartanburg High School.
Gamecock commits headline the South Carolina roster
Leading the way for the South Carolina squad is J’Zavien Currence of South Pointe, a cornerstone pledge in the secondary. Currence will line up at his future college position of defensive back. Joining him is tight end commit Jamel Howse, who earned Shrine Bowl honors but will suit up at wide receiver for the game.
Versatile athlete Caden Ramsey also made the cut. The Cross High standout has showcased his skills on both sides of the ball, and his flexibility landed him in the coveted “athlete” category. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks will be well represented in the trenches, as in-state offensive line pledges Zyon Guiles and Anthony Baxter were both tapped to compete.
Recruiting targets earn invites
South Carolina’s recruiting board was also well represented among the selections. Greenwood’s Triston Lewis, recruited by the Gamecocks as a defensive back, was chosen to play quarterback for the Shrine Bowl after starring at the position for the Eagles. Four-star Sequel Patterson of Indian Land, another top South Carolina target, was selected on defense despite his reputation as a standout wide receiver.
North Carolina roster features Gamecock commit
The North Carolina side will also feature some garnet and black flavor, with defensive tackle commit Noah Clark earning his place on the roster.
Selection limits leave some out
Under Shrine Bowl rules, no more than two players can be picked from the same high school, which kept other South Carolina targets off the list. That cap excluded names like Kosci Barnes of Grimsley and the talented twin duo Aiden and Andrew Harris from Myers Park.
Beamer’s Carolinas pipeline on display
The Shrine Bowl has long been recognized as a proving ground for future SEC and ACC stars, and this year’s strong South Carolina presence is another example of Shane Beamer’s recruiting emphasis on locking down talent across the Carolinas pipeline.
