South Carolina’s dominant 114–47 victory over Bowling Green on Friday night came with a moment of concern for the Gamecocks faithful, as freshman guard Agot Makeer exited the game with an apparent injury.
Makeer, who had been one of the early bright spots for Dawn Staley’s team this season, went down during the second half and was visibly shaken. However, after the game, Staley appeared cautiously optimistic when addressing Makeer’s condition.
“No. I mean, she’s not crying, so that’s a good thing,” Staley said when asked for an update on the freshman’s status.
While Staley didn’t provide specifics about the nature or severity of the injury, her tone suggested that the issue may not be serious. Still, South Carolina will be careful with Makeer’s recovery, especially given her growing role in the team’s early-season success.
Makeer had been playing with confidence before the incident, contributing on both ends of the floor and displaying the defensive energy that’s quickly earned her minutes in Staley’s rotation. Earlier in the season, she impressed in limited action after Tessa Johnson picked up two quick fouls, scoring nine of her 12 points in the first quarter and showing poise beyond her years.
The injury briefly cast a shadow over what was otherwise another statement performance from the Gamecocks, who dominated every phase of the game against Bowling Green. South Carolina shot an impressive 63.6% from the field and had seven players score in double figures, led by Joyce Edwards’ 24 points.
As the Gamecocks continue their early-season march, all eyes will be on Makeer’s recovery timeline. Staley’s program, known for its depth and player development, will likely take a cautious approach to ensure the freshman guard returns to full health.
For now, Staley and her team are relieved that the injury doesn’t appear to be severe — and hopeful that Makeer will be back on the court soon.
“She’s tough,” one staff member noted postgame. “Agot doesn’t stay down long.”
With a packed November schedule ahead, South Carolina’s next update on Makeer will be highly anticipated by fans eager to see the promising freshman back in action.
