South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers delivered one of his strongest performances of the season in the Gamecocks’ 51-7 blowout victory over Coastal Carolina, piling up 274 passing yards, 82 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns. After the game, he broke down the night, the game plan, and what lies ahead.
On opening the game with a touchdown pass on the very first play:
Sellers said the big strike wasn’t a surprise.
“It was just an RPO based off of the leverage of the defender that they had over him,” he explained. “He played the run, so I just spread it out there.”
On who’s faster — LaNorris or Jayden Sellers — and whether he ever imagined throwing Jayden a touchdown as kids:
Both brothers didn’t hesitate.
“I’m the fastest,” they said.
LaNorris added, “I’m the fastest. We didn’t play together until high school, so from then until now, it’s the first time for stuff.”
On whether Saturday’s output was the most yardage the brothers have combined for:
Sellers pointed back to their high school days.
“My senior year in state, I don’t know how many yards he had, but he had more than 120.”
Jayden chimed in: “I’m pretty sure I had like 130 and two touchdowns.”
On how an explosive opening play affects momentum:
“It just makes it easier,” Sellers said. “When you get a fast start, it’s a momentum game, so if you get momentum from the jump, you’ll be in pretty good shape as long as you keep the momentum.”
On what it would mean to beat Clemson multiple times as a South Carolina quarterback:
Sellers acknowledged the weight of the rivalry.
“Yeah, it would mean a lot. It’s an instate rivalry game, we beat them last year, (inaudible). Obviously, we want to do that again.”
On what he likes about Mike Furrey’s recent play calling:
Sellers noted Furrey’s emphasis on creating favorable matchups.
“He’s getting guys in space and just allowing for one-on-one opportunities,” he said. “All college defenses, they get to the ball pretty quick. You can’t just get a lot of guys in space and expect them to miss. You’ve got to get one-on-one opportunities and our guys versus their guys.”
On how his relationship with Furrey has developed:
“It’s good,” Sellers said. “We spend a lot of time together, just being in the facility, like meeting extra, stuff like that. Just him talking, letting me know what he sees… then getting my input on stuff like that.”
On his future beyond this season:
“I’m just focused on the season right now,” he said. “Like I said, when the time comes, I’ll make that decision.”
On Jayden Sellers’ growth as a dependable target:
“Yeah, just the growth from January to now,” LaNorris said. “We talk a lot, picking his brain, seeing what he’s thinking, what he sees… But, yeah, I’ll trust him just because he’s my blood.”
On how long the team has had the Brady Hunt “tush push” (QB sneak) in the playbook:
“It’s just a quarterback sneak,” Sellers said. “They would do it with me. It’s just switching guys in and out of there. That’s all it was.”
On running the QB sneak for the first time this season:
“It was,” he confirmed.
On how much Saturday’s win helps ease tension heading into Clemson week:
“It means a lot,” he said. “Like, some teams could go there and just (play) like the season’s over, blah, blah, blah. But we’ve still got stuff to play for… It’s always good to go out there.”
On Jayden’s advice to LaNorris about next season:
“Nah. Not really,” Jayden said.
But when asked about his wish?
“Make sure we play together.”
