Shane Beamer Never Even Got Him on Campus — Now One of the Nation’s Top Pass Rushers is Gone to Notre Dame

The South Carolina Gamecocks have been riding a wave of recruiting momentum in recent weeks, securing commitments from four-star athlete Brayden Tyson and receiver Javien Robinson. But Tuesday evening delivered a stinging reality check — one that exposes a critical vulnerability in Beamer’s 2027 class before it’s even fully assembled.

The Loss That Stings

Four-star EDGE rusher Jackson Vaughn officially took himself off the board on May 26, announcing his verbal commitment to Notre Dame — choosing the Fighting Irish over a final group that included South Carolina, Auburn, Miami, and LSU. Rated the No. 22 EDGE rusher nationally in the 2027 class and the No. 5 prospect out of New Jersey, Vaughn is exactly the kind of impact pass rusher that programs covet in today’s game.

The decision came roughly a month after an unofficial visit to Notre Dame on April 25 — a visit that clearly left a lasting impression. Notably, Vaughn announced his reclassification from the class of 2028 to 2027 just days after that trip to South Bend, a timeline that suggests Notre Dame’s program had already locked in his interest early. He is expected to enroll early at Notre Dame next spring.

The Detail That Hurts Most for the Gamecocks

Perhaps the most damaging footnote in this recruitment isn’t the loss itself — it’s how it was lost. Of the five finalists, South Carolina and LSU were the only two schools Vaughn never visited in person. In modern recruiting, an official or unofficial campus visit is often the decisive moment that cements a relationship between a prospect and a program. Without ever getting Vaughn on the ground in Columbia, the Gamecocks were essentially fighting with one hand tied behind their back.

It raises a fair question: Was South Carolina ever truly in the driver’s seat here, or were the Gamecocks simply a name on a list?

A Glaring Hole That Demands Attention

The bigger concern isn’t just missing out on Vaughn — it’s what his absence reveals. Head coach Shane Beamer currently does not have a single EDGE rusher committed in his 2027 class, which sits ranked No. 30 nationally. For a program with SEC aspirations, that is a position of need that cannot go unaddressed. Dominant pass rushers don’t just win games — they change them, create turnovers, and set the tone for entire defenses.

Vaughn’s early reclassification from 2028 to 2027 also serves as a reminder of how quickly the recruiting landscape can shift. What appeared to be a long-term target suddenly became an urgent priority — and South Carolina may not have adjusted fast enough.

What Comes Next

Recruiting, as anyone in the sport understands, is a game of hits and misses. No program wins every battle. But losing a prospect of Vaughn’s caliber — particularly without ever hosting him on campus — will serve as a lesson in urgency for Beamer’s staff.

The Gamecocks will now need to pivot, identify the next wave of EDGE targets in the 2027 cycle, and make sure those visits get scheduled and secured before Notre Dame, LSU, or Miami swoops in again.

The swoosh may be coming to Columbia, the momentum on the trail is real — but the work to build an elite 2027 class is far from finished.
