South Carolina Loses Out on Four-Star LB Ja’Bois Smith to Florida

The South Carolina Gamecocks suffered a notable recruiting setback Thursday as four-star linebacker Ja’Bois Smith verbally committed to the Florida Gators, ending what had been a highly competitive recruitment that came down to five Power programs.

A Highly Coveted Prospect

Smith is no ordinary recruit. Rated as the nation’s No. 12 linebacker and the 13th-ranked prospect out of Georgia, the versatile defender was one of the more sought-after linebackers in the 2027 class. His appeal extends beyond just football — per his 247Sports page, Smith plays on both sides of the football and also competes in track and field, underscoring the elite athleticism that made him such a priority target for programs like South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and Texas A&M.

Florida Closes Fast

The Gators’ recruitment of Smith accelerated quickly down the stretch. Smith took an official visit to Florida on May 28, and he clearly was so impressed he committed to the Gators a day later. It was a rapid close by Florida’s staff that left little room for competitors to respond. South Carolina had a visit scheduled with Smith for June 12, but given his commitment, it remains uncertain whether that trip will still take place. Should it proceed, it would at minimum give Shane Beamer’s staff an opportunity to make a last impression and potentially pursue a flip — though flipping a fresh commit is always an uphill battle.

A Real Need Goes Unfilled — For Now

The timing stings for South Carolina beyond just losing a top-ranked player. The Gamecocks’ 2027 class currently does not include a linebacker, making Smith’s recruitment all the more critical. With him now off the board, Beamer and his staff will need to identify and pursue alternative targets to address what is becoming a clear positional need. The linebacker room is not an area a program can afford to neglect in recruiting, and this miss makes that task more urgent heading into the summer visit period.

Class Still Holds Steady

Despite the setback, South Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class still ranks 31st nationally with nine verbal commits — a respectable foundation, though one that still has notable gaps to address. This is a big loss for South Carolina, but the class remains competitive at this stage, and how the Gamecocks respond in the coming weeks will say a lot about the program’s ability to weather recruiting adversity and pivot effectively.

Recruiting is a long game, and one miss — even a significant one — does not define a class. But for now, the edge goes to Florida, who landed one of the top linebackers in the country with a decisive and well-timed close.
