Shane Beamer’s program lands its ninth 2027 pledge — and one of the more physically imposing prospects in the class.
South Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class got bigger — literally — on Wednesday, when offensive tackle Clayton Lee verbally committed to the Gamecocks following an official visit to Columbia.
Lee, who hails from West Nassau County High School in Callahan, Florida, brings the kind of frame that offensive line coaches build around. At 6-7 and 315 pounds, he already carries prototypical NFL-caliber size for the position, and at just a 2027 prospect, that physical profile alone justifies the scholarship investments from programs well above South Carolina’s current recruiting footprint.
What Lee Brings
On the 247Sports Composite, Lee checks in as a 3-star prospect — the 86th-ranked offensive tackle in the country, the 103rd player in Florida’s loaded 2027 class, and the 1,050th overall prospect nationally. Those numbers are respectable, but they likely undersell a prospect whose measurables suggest significant room for upward movement as his recruitment and development mature.
His offer sheet tells the fuller story. Lee collected 18 scholarship offers, drawing interest from Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Louisville, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and Wake Forest — a cross-section of Power Four programs that don’t extend offers to offensive linemen without serious evaluation. Florida’s interest in particular, given the Gators’ in-state recruiting infrastructure, signals that Lee is a legitimate prospect in one of the nation’s deepest talent pipelines.
Why South Carolina?
Lee told Hayes Fawcett of Rivals that he chose South Carolina over Virginia Tech, UCF and NC State — a final four that reflects genuine Power Four competition for his commitment. Virginia Tech and NC State are both programs with credible offensive line development histories, which makes the Gamecocks’ close in this recruitment meaningful.
The official visit to Columbia clearly did its job. South Carolina’s coaching staff, particularly on the offensive side, made a strong enough impression to beat out programs with comparable or stronger recent track records on the line.
Class Context
With Lee’s commitment, South Carolina now holds nine pledges in the 2027 cycle. The class currently sits at No. 63 nationally on the Composite — a number that reflects both the early stage of the recruiting cycle and the roster-building work still ahead for Beamer’s staff.
Landing a prospect with Lee’s size and offer volume at this stage of the 2027 cycle is the kind of foundational addition that can shift class rankings as the cycle matures. Offensive tackle is a premium position, and 6-7/315 frames with multi-Power Four offer sheets don’t grow on trees. If Lee develops as his physical profile suggests he can, this commitment could look considerably better by the time signing day arrives.
