Dawn Staley has secured her first commitment of the 2027 recruiting class, as four-star guard Taylor Brown announced her pledge to South Carolina women’s basketball on Instagram Live Saturday.

Brown’s Profile

Brown, ranked No. 30 nationally in the 2027 class by ESPN, is a 5-foot-6 guard who took her official visit to Columbia in late September — the same weekend South Carolina also hosted five-star recruits Jezelle “GG” Banks and Jordyn Palmer. In the end, South Carolina beat out North Carolina and Tennessee to secure her commitment, closing out a recruitment that had also included earlier interest from Virginia Tech.

What Brown Brings to the Table

Brown has been vocal about what sets her apart as a prospect, emphasizing defense as her calling card. Speaking with On3’s Talia Goodman, she explained: “I have to separate myself on the defensive end so I can earn my time to play, because not everybody’s willing to play defense the way I will.” She also highlighted her offensive versatility, describing an ability to score from all three levels: “Another thing is the way I can score at all three levels. I can shoot threes. I can get floaters and layups and stuff like that.” Brown added that while scoring is part of her game, she also values setting up teammates: “Also, how I get paint touches and get my teammates involved – I’m not a pass-first, but I want to get my teammates involved, definitely, and also score.”

What This Means for South Carolina

Brown’s commitment gives South Carolina its first official building block for the 2027 class, and notably comes from a player who already carries recognition as a strong two-way guard — a profile that fits neatly into the identity Staley has built around defensive intensity. Her pledge also arrives amid a broader recruiting push that’s seen the Gamecocks host several top-tier guards this fall, including Banks and Palmer, both of whom remain uncommitted as South Carolina continues pursuing a loaded group of backcourt talent for the class.

With one commitment now in hand and other high-profile visits still playing out, South Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class is beginning to take shape — and landing Brown, who chose the Gamecocks over multiple ACC and SEC programs, serves as an early positive signal for Staley’s broader efforts this cycle.
