Beamer’s Post-Game Reaction Admits to 0-3 in SEC Play
South Carolina squandered an early 17-0 lead and fell in overtime to Kentucky, dropping to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in SEC play — a third straight conference loss that deepens the pressure surrounding the program.
Beamer’s Reaction
Beamer was direct about the stakes, rejecting any framing of moral victories: “We’ve got to win football games. I’m not dumb. We’re not here for moral victories. I’m proud of the way they competed. I’m proud of the way they responded. But ultimately you’re judged on wins and losses. You’ve got to win football games. But I am proud as hell of the young men in that locker room, and how they stuck together this week, and how they battled tonight.”
Addressing Job Security Questions
With national reports suggesting Beamer’s job could be in jeopardy following the Alabama loss, he expressed confidence in his standing: South Carolina now sits at 35-33 during his tenure following the Kentucky loss. On support from the administration, Beamer said: “I don’t know anything other than what they’ve told me. They’ve been super supportive and have been all along. Wish we could put a better result on the field tonight.” On what gives him confidence moving forward: “We’ve faced adversity before and we’ve always responded the right way. We’ve got good coaches that have been in battles before and have won a lot of games around here and have done some things that haven’t been done before. We’ve got the right kind of people in our locker room right, players and coaches. It’s not good enough right now, I’ll well aware of that.”
Breaking Down the Collapse
South Carolina led 27-24 early in the fourth quarter with a chance to seal the game, but a Sellers fumble flipped momentum. Beamer explained the significance: “Disappointed. We had the game firmly in control, and then we fumbled. It’s a killer because we’ve got a chance really there to go down the field and really take command of this game. And when you fumble, we’ve got to go out there on defense and put the ball down and stop the bleeding, and we didn’t do it.” Kentucky tied the game at 27-27 on the ensuing drive, and neither team scored again in regulation, sending the game to overtime. South Carolina struck first on a Sellers-to-Moe Brown touchdown, but Kentucky answered with a touchdown of its own, then won the game on a successful two-point conversion.
Praising the Team’s Culture
Despite the painful result, Beamer leaned heavily on praising his team’s resilience and character: “I know people don’t want to hear about culture and the type of young men in our program, or they don’t give a crap. We’ve got great young men in this program. And if we didn’t have a strong culture, with all the negativity this week and the way we played last week, we would not have responded tonight like we did… Those players have each other’s backs. They hurt like hell right now.” He added: “I’m sorry that I didn’t do a better job for them, putting them in position where they could finish the game in overtime tonight and get the feeling that they all deserve.”
The Quarterback Situation
Despite reports that backup Cutter Woods had taken increased first-team practice reps, both quarterbacks technically “started,” with a creative first-play sequence Beamer credited to OC Kendal Briles: “[Briles] came to me on Wednesday and said, ‘What do you think about these two plays being the first two plays of the game?’ And I’m like, I love it. Let’s go.” From there, Sellers played the entirety of the game, finishing 20-for-36 for 226 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 147 rushing yards. Beamer expressed full confidence in sticking with Sellers throughout: “I felt like LaNorris was giving us a chance. I thought he played his butt off tonight and made throws… Certainly if we felt like LaNorris wasn’t getting it done, we had no hesitation going with Cutter tonight. But I never felt like we were at that point.”
