South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley has publicly challenged a reporter’s characterization of an incident involving her former player Raven Johnson and Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson, pushing back against what she viewed as an incomplete account of the situation.

The controversy began with a pregame media video featuring Johnson and Indiana Fever teammate Myisha Hines-Allen no before Game 3 of the WNBA playoff series against the Aces. During the conversation, the two players joked about a physical sequence involving Wilson.

Earlier in the game, Hines-Allen had been called for a foul after shoving Wilson following a first-quarter play. While discussing the incident, Johnson asked what had caused all the “chaos.” Hines-Allen responded that she had been a “rage-baiter.”

Johnson then replied, “You do it with such a smile,” before laughing with her teammate.

Although Wilson was not directly named in the video, the comments quickly attracted attention online. Indiana eventually lost Game 3 94-83, bringing its playoff run to an end, but discussion surrounding the video continued after the game.

The situation took another turn when Indianapolis Star reporter Brian Haenchen wrote about the Fever players’ pregame “media sesh.” In promoting his story, Haenchen wrote that the comments had “apparently got the rookie a talking to from Dawn Staley.”

Haenchen later added that he did not initially understand why the incident had become controversial, describing the exchange as “fun lighthearted and largely nondescript.”

That description caught Staley’s attention. The South Carolina coach responded directly on X, suggesting the reporter did not have the complete picture before making his assumption.

Staley wrote: “If you only knew….or thought outside of your box. Furthermore if you’d just asked before assuming or reporting there might be some truth to your article but I’ll let you carry on.”

Her response suggested that there was more behind the situation than what had been presented publicly, particularly regarding her conversation with Johnson.

Haenchen then responded to Staley and attempted to clarify his reporting. He explained that the article had been written after the Fever’s shootaround and acknowledged that part of his promotional wording could have been better.

“Hi! Not sure if you read the story, but it was written yesterday following shootaround. That part of tweet you referenced was poorly worded and I apologize — I clarified in a reply. But no, not a clickbait story. Just a fun pregame report,” Haenchen wrote.

The episode is notable because of Staley’s longstanding relationship with Johnson. Johnson played for Staley at South Carolina from 2021 through 2026, helping the Gamecocks win two national championships before entering the WNBA.

Johnson was selected No. 10 overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2026 WNBA Draft. During her rookie season, she primarily contributed as a reserve, averaging 3.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 10.9 minutes per game.

Following the viral video, Johnson also addressed the controversy herself. She apologized for her comments and expressed her respect and admiration for Wilson, making clear that she did not intend to disrespect the WNBA star.

Ultimately, the controversy appears to have become less about the original lighthearted exchange and more about how the incident was interpreted and reported afterward. Staley’s response indicates that she believed the public account left out important context, while Haenchen maintained that his story was intended as a straightforward pregame report rather than clickbait.
