Former Gamecock Ty Harris Injury Update: Indiana Fever Provides Encouraging News After Surgery
Successful surgery offers hope after devastating setback
For Harris, the injury represents another difficult challenge after an already frustrating period of recovery. The veteran guard had worked hard to return to the court following a serious left knee injury that limited her to just five games during the 2025 WNBA season. After signing with Indiana in April 2026, she gradually re-established herself as a dependable part of the Fever’s backcourt rotation.
The latest setback occurred during Indiana’s regular-season finale against the Minnesota Lynx on September 24. Harris went down while attempting a layup in the third quarter, landing awkwardly on her left leg. She immediately showed signs of significant pain and required assistance from team personnel to leave the court.
Indiana subsequently confirmed that Harris had broken her left fibula and would miss the remainder of the 2026 season, including the WNBA playoffs. The announcement came on September 26.
What has the Indiana Fever medical team said?
The most significant development since the injury is the confirmation that Harris underwent successful surgery. However, the Fever have not released detailed information about the procedure, the precise stage of her rehabilitation or a target date for her return.
During the team’s end-of-season discussions, head coach Stephanie White addressed Harris’s condition and the organization’s continued support.
“(I) don’t have a status update,” White said. “I know she has had successful surgery, and right now we’re just checking in on her, making sure that she’s feeling good and feeling OK.”
White’s comments provide reassurance that the procedure was successful, but they should not be interpreted as confirmation that Harris is close to returning. The next steps will depend on her recovery and the medical team’s assessment of her progress.
The Fever coach also spoke emotionally about the impact of losing the veteran guard after watching her work back from her previous injury.
“It’s heartbreaking,” White said. “Certainly, an emotional locker room after the game. Ty means a lot to us as a human being, and she means a lot to us as a player, too. I hate it for her because she worked so hard to get back. We’re going to be with her through all of it.”
Harris made a valuable contribution to Indiana
Before the fracture, Harris had appeared in 39 games during the 2026 regular season, making four starts. She averaged 4.1 points and 2.0 assists in approximately 13.6 minutes per game, providing experienced ball-handling, perimeter defense and stability for the second unit.
Her ability to contribute when called upon was evident in several performances. She scored 16 points against the Los Angeles Sparks in June while filling in for an injured Caitlin Clark. In August, she recorded 15 points against the Dallas Wings, making all five of her three-point attempts.
Those performances illustrated why Indiana valued her beyond her regular scoring averages. Harris offered the coaching staff a reliable veteran who could manage possessions, defend opposing guards and step into a larger role when circumstances demanded it.
Her absence also created an opportunity for fellow former Gamecock Raven Johnson to receive additional playing time during Indiana’s playoff run.

Tyasha Harris
I was hoping this post would be about making it through my first surgery, fighting my way back, and being able to finish a healthy season. How surreal it was to play for hometown when I was a little kid in the stands cheering to now being on the court playing. Instead, God had a different plan for how this chapter would end.Still, I have so much to be thankful for.
This season gave me memories I’ll always carry with me, and I’m grateful I got the opportunity to get back out there and play the game I love again. I definitely wish I could had finished it alongside my team, but sometimes the journey doesn’t go exactly how you pictured it.I’ve been here before. I know what it takes to start over, and I know what’s in me. So… back to work. Another journey begins. That get back is real 😂🙏🏾❤️🩹
What happens next in Harris’s recovery?
Harris now faces the rehabilitation process following surgery on her broken left fibula. Although the successful procedure is encouraging, there is no publicly confirmed timetable for her return to full basketball activity.
Her previous knee injury makes this setback particularly disappointing, but the two injuries are different, and her recovery from one should not be used to predict the timeline for the other. Her medical team will need to guide her progression according to the nature of the fracture, healing and functional readiness.
The Fever’s latest comments indicate that the organization intends to remain involved in supporting her throughout the process. Her longer-term future with Indiana is also uncertain, as she entered free agency after the season.
For now, the most accurate update is that Ty Harris has undergone successful surgery, is receiving the Fever organization’s support, and has no publicly announced return date. Further details about her rehabilitation will be important for determining when the former South Carolina standout can resume basketball activities.
