South Carolina Declines NIT Bid – Lamont Paris Explains Why
Despite a tough finish in SEC play, South Carolina earned an automatic NIT invitation after missing out on the NCAA Tournament. However, instead of competing in the postseason, head coach Lamont Paris and the Gamecocks opted to decline the bid and shift their focus to next season.
Paris on the Decision
Paris addressed the move, expressing his respect for the NIT but citing roster attrition as a major factor.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for the NIT and the exciting opportunity it provides good teams to continue playing for a championship. Unfortunately, due to some attrition on our roster with injuries, we decided it was best not to participate this year.”
Paris also acknowledged the team’s efforts throughout the season, competing in what he called “one of the best conferences in college basketball history.”
“While we did not reach our goal of making the NCAA Tournament, I am extremely proud of the effort and determination our guys played with all season. Much sincere thanks to our dedicated fanbase for its outstanding support. We will build on that and start our work immediately as we look to make a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2026.”
Why the Gamecocks Said No to the NIT
While skipping a postseason opportunity may seem surprising, there are some clear strategic advantages for South Carolina:
- Transfer Portal Focus: With player movement at an all-time high, skipping the NIT allows Paris and his staff to evaluate portal talent earlier than teams still competing.
- Roster Reshaping: South Carolina already signed four recruits in the 2025 class, headlined by four-star point guard Eli Ellis. The team is also expected to aggressively pursue transfers, especially with Collin Murray-Boyles likely declaring for the NBA Draft.
- Long-Term Vision: Instead of playing short-handed in the NIT, the Gamecocks are prioritizing roster development and recruiting, aiming for a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2026.
After making the Big Dance in 2024, South Carolina took a different path this season. But with a strong recruiting class and a renewed focus on the future, Paris and his squad are determined to get back to March Madness next year.
