“4-Star ATH Caden Ramsey Set to Decide: South Carolina or Virginia Tech? Gamecocks Push Hard Before Commitment Day”

Cross High’s Caden Ramsey Nearing College Decision Between South Carolina and Virginia Tech

Cross High School star tight end Caden Ramsey is set to come off the recruiting board Monday. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound standout will announce his commitment at 12:30 p.m. at his school, choosing between South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia, and Syracuse.

But according to his head coach, Shawn Wright, the decision is really down to two schools.

“I think he knows what he’s going to do,” Wright said. “He seems to be locked in on South Carolina and Virginia Tech. I know he had Syracuse and Georgia Tech, but I think it’s coming down to between South Carolina and Virginia Tech, and I think he kind of knows what he wants to do.”

Wright praised both programs for the effort they’ve put into recruiting Ramsey. “Both schools did an awesome job recruiting him and making him feel as though they really want him a part of their program. I know he likes both coaching staffs. He’s just excited to be able to take his talents to either one of those schools.”

South Carolina extended an offer after tight ends coach Shawn Elliott put Ramsey through an extensive workout at a June camp.

“Elliott definitely likes him as a hybrid, one of those tight ends that doesn’t necessarily put his hands in the ground, but they can flank him out,” Wright explained. “They want mismatches against linebackers and safeties. I had a conversation with Coach (Shane) Beamer, and he didn’t know (Ramsey) led the state in interceptions last year. He’s pretty sure his defensive back coach would want to try him as well. South Carolina’s obviously going to give him a chance to find a spot somewhere on that field if he goes there. Virginia Tech definitely likes him at the tight end spot.”

Whichever program lands Ramsey will be getting a versatile and competitive athlete, Wright emphasized.

“He’s a very, very competitive kid,” Wright said. “His will to win, he just doesn’t like to lose. He’s now understanding how to practice at the level at which we want him to practice. That’s been a learning curve for him because he’s just so much more talented than the guys around him at Cross. Through these first two ballgames, he has taken off. We’re talking two interceptions, think he ran a kickoff back 70-something yards the other night, and two receiving touchdowns. He’s on pace to have a really outstanding year.”

Last season, Ramsey was a two-way standout, hauling in 46 receptions for 749 yards and nine touchdowns while leading the state with 14 interceptions as a free safety.

He also plans to be in Columbia soon. Wright confirmed that Ramsey will attend South Carolina’s upcoming game against South Carolina State and has an official visit scheduled with the Gamecocks the following weekend.
