South Carolina is preparing for another important SEC showdown against Oklahoma, with kickoff scheduled for 4:15 p.m. ET (3:15 p.m. local time) on the SEC Network. The Sooners enter the matchup as 4.5-point favorites, but the Gamecocks have recently given their supporters plenty of reasons to believe they can pull off another significant victory.

After consecutive wins over Florida and No. 11 Tennessee, South Carolina appears to be building momentum. Several storylines will determine whether that progress continues.

1. The Gamecocks Are Starting to Resemble the 2024 Team

There is an increasingly familiar feeling surrounding South Carolina. The Gamecocks’ recent turnaround has drawn comparisons to their remarkable 2024 campaign.

That season, South Carolina opened with a 3-3 record before winning six consecutive games to finish the regular season at 9-3. This year, the team appeared to be in serious trouble after beginning 2-3, but victories over Florida and Tennessee have changed the conversation.

Another win against Oklahoma would bring the Gamecocks closer to completing a similar comeback. If they win their remaining games, including a challenging matchup against Georgia, they could once again finish 9-3.

Senior cornerback Judge Collier recognizes the similarities.

“It’s going in that direction,” senior cornerback Judge Collier said, “and that’s the goal.”

South Carolina is playing with greater confidence, and its biggest contributors are beginning to deliver in critical moments. Although the team has not completely recreated the feeling of its 2024 run, the recent improvement suggests that another memorable finish is possible.

2. The Slow Start Remains a Source of Frustration

Despite the encouraging turnaround, questions remain about why South Carolina needed so much time to find its identity.

The Gamecocks entered the season with considerable expectations, returning quarterback LaNorris Sellers and defensive standout Dylan Stewart while making efforts to improve the offensive line. With a roster reportedly valued around $35 million, missing the early-season opportunity to compete for major postseason goals has been disappointing.

The three losses, particularly the blowout defeat against Alabama, created doubts about the team’s overall quality. Recent performances have shown that South Carolina has considerably more potential than its early results suggested.

Offensive lineman Nolan Hay believes execution was the biggest issue.

“I mean, you can’t really dwell on the past, especially with this game in this league,” offensive lineman Nolan Hay said. “Yeah it’s tough but so what, now what?”

He also explained what changed during the team’s resurgence.

“I think we’re just finishing play,” Hay said of the turnaround. “The plays were there to make, and we weren’t making them.”

3. Turnovers Could Give South Carolina a Major Advantage

Oklahoma’s tendency to surrender possession could become one of the most important factors in this matchup.

Through seven games, the Sooners have recorded 15 turnovers lost, including seven fumbles and eight interceptions. That figure places them among the SEC’s worst teams in protecting the football.

Quarterback John Mateer and the Oklahoma offense could give South Carolina’s defense opportunities to create game-changing moments. However, simply forcing mistakes will not be enough. The Gamecocks must convert those opportunities into takeaways.

Defensive players will need to secure interceptions and recover loose footballs rather than allowing potential turnovers to escape.

4. Can Nyck Harbor Rediscover His Offensive Impact?

Nyck Harbor entered the season expected to be South Carolina’s leading receiver, but his recent performances have fallen short of expectations.

His playing time decreased against Florida, and he finished the Tennessee victory without a reception on just one target. Meanwhile, Mazeo Bennett, DJ Black and Donovan Murph have received more opportunities.

Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles remains confident Harbor can contribute.

“I hate it that he hasn’t had the production he expected, and that we expected,” said offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. “He can really help us as an offense and as a football team. So, you know, I’m not writing off Nyck at all.”

A productive performance against Oklahoma could help Harbor regain confidence and become a bigger part of the offense.

5. South Carolina Needs Its Biggest Stars to Deliver Again

The Tennessee victory demonstrated why Sellers and Stewart remain so important to this football program.

Sellers fought through contact from two defenders before reaching the end zone for the game-tying touchdown. Shortly afterward, Stewart exploded around the edge and forced a strip-sack against Tennessee quarterback George McIntyre, creating the opportunity for South Carolina’s winning field goal.

Both players have faced criticism during the season, but their performances offered a reminder of their ability to change games.

If Sellers continues making plays with his legs and Stewart maintains his disruptive presence, South Carolina will have a strong foundation against Oklahoma.

The Gamecocks have already shown they can recover from a difficult start. Now, the challenge is proving that their recent success is more than a temporary run of momentum.
