Shane Beamer Sends Heartfelt Message to Connor Shaw During Missouri Game

Saturday night’s SEC clash between South Carolina and Missouri was a big one for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks. But after the first quarter, Beamer’s focus shifted beyond the field to a familiar face in Gamecock history — former quarterback Connor Shaw, who suffered a serious health scare earlier in the week at his child’s youth football game.

During his end-of-quarter interview, Beamer made sure to recognize Shaw and deliver an emotional message.

“Connor Shaw, I know you’re watching back home in South Carolina. I know you went home today,” Beamer said. “We love you brother, and we’re thinking of you, my man. God bless.”

The positive news is that Shaw, 33, had been released from the hospital and was able to return home on Saturday.

Shaw remains one of the most respected players in South Carolina football history. From 2011–2013, he thrived as a dual-threat quarterback, throwing for 6,074 yards and rushing for 1,693 yards. Under his leadership, the Gamecocks went an impressive 27-5, making him one of the program’s most successful signal-callers.

Meanwhile, the current Gamecocks entered Saturday night’s Mayor’s Cup matchup with Missouri looking to avoid back-to-back losses. The Tigers held an 8-6 all-time edge in the rivalry heading into the contest.
