South Carolina Baseball Fills Out Schnall’s Staff with Two Key Hires
South Carolina baseball coach Kevin Schnall has been on the job for less than a month, yet he’s already assembled a coaching staff that signals both continuity and ambition. The mix of hires — some following Schnall from Coastal Carolina, others brought in from outside programs and even Major League Baseball — suggests a deliberate strategy: pair familiar voices who know his system with fresh expertise that can address specific gaps.
On Monday, South Carolina made official two new additions to that staff. Dan Valerio’s role as assistant recruiting coordinator/field coordinator had already been reported, but Monday’s announcement made it formal. He’s joined by Kyle Lindquist, who steps in as defensive coordinator/infield coach.
Valerio’s hire is a clear continuity move. He previously served on the Wake Forest coaching staff alongside Bill Cilento — now South Carolina’s associate head coach and hitting coach — and held the recruiting director title in Winston-Salem. Bringing him to Columbia effectively reunites a working relationship that already produced results at Wake Forest, and recruiting is often where new coaching regimes live or die in their first two recruiting cycles. Having someone who already has a rapport with Cilento reduces the learning curve significantly.
Lindquist’s addition is the more unconventional hire, and arguably the more intriguing one. He spent the last six years in the Cleveland Guardians’ front office as a senior analyst in scouting and development — MLB experience that brings a modern, data-driven lens to infield instruction and defensive alignment, areas where college programs increasingly borrow from professional models. His playing background, as a three-time all-conference and one-time All-American pitcher at Marietta, plus prior stints coaching at Davidson, Denison, and Marietta, gives him credibility on both the analytics side and the on-field teaching side. Pulling a scouting-department mind out of pro baseball and into a defensive coordinator role is the kind of hire that reflects where college baseball is trending: infield defense and positioning are being treated with the same analytical rigor as pitching development already receives.
Taken together, the two hires round out a staff that now blends recruiting continuity, hitting expertise from Wake Forest, and a professional scouting background — pieces that suggest Schnall is building infrastructure for the long term rather than just patching immediate needs.
