South Carolina’s hot recruiting stretch over the past week isn’t limited to a single class. It’s now spilled forward into the future, opening a new chapter a full recruiting cycle ahead of schedule.

Burlington (N.C.) Southeast Alamance four-star Joseph “Jet” Gibbs became the first domino to fall for the Gamecocks’ 2028 class, pledging to the program on Tuesday. That a program is already landing verbal commitments for a class still two years from signing day speaks to the level of trust Gibbs and his camp are placing in the current coaching staff — a strong signal for how the Gamecocks are being perceived nationally right now.

At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Gibbs carries the generic “athlete” tag on Rivals, but his path forward is already defined: he’ll suit up as a wide receiver in Columbia. That destination traces back to a standout camp performance last month, one strong enough to earn him an offer on the spot — a reminder that in-person evaluation still carries enormous weight in recruiting, sometimes outweighing months of film study. Wide receivers coach Mike Furrey has led the pursuit, and landing a Blue Chip-caliber pass catcher is a meaningful early building block for whatever receiver room Furrey assembles two cycles down the line.

The broader recruiting community has taken notice, too — Wes Mitchell and fellow subscribers are already breaking down what the pledge means for the Gamecocks over on The Insiders Forum.

The commitment carries extra weight given the company Gibbs kept during his recruitment. Already regarded as a Blue Chip prospect, he chose South Carolina over a crowded field that included North Carolina, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Florida, Kentucky, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech. Beating out that many ACC and SEC programs — several within driving distance of his hometown — suggests South Carolina’s pitch resonated on more than just proximity or convenience.

The rankings back up the hype. Gibbs sits at No. 297 overall in the class of 2028 per the Rivals Industry Ranking, checks in at No. 12 nationally among all players tagged as “athletes,” and stands as the No. 12 overall prospect in the state of North Carolina for the cycle — a strong in-state ranking that could open doors to further recruiting relationships in a talent-rich pipeline state.

Gibbs may be the first name on the 2028 board, but he’s arriving on the heels of serious momentum in the 2027 class as well. Over the last week and a half alone, South Carolina has also added commitments from Columbia (S.C.) Hammond three-star LB Jackson Ross, Cornelius (N.C.) Hough five-star CB Josh Dobson, four-star S Davion Jones, Irmo (S.C.) four-star OL Nate Carson, and Rolesville (N.C.) three-star EDGE Jayden Broadie. Five commitments across two classes in such a short window points to a coaching staff firing on all cylinders on the trail right now, regardless of which cycle the priority sits in.
