South Carolina has officially entered the Nike era, but one important piece of the Gamecocks’ basketball program isn’t changing. Despite the school’s move from Under Armour to Nike for uniforms and athletic gear, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will continue using Wilson basketballs.

The decision became clear after offseason practice footage showed players training with Wilson basketballs, reinforcing a philosophy that has been central to the program’s success. For head coach Dawn Staley,y the choice goes far beyond brand loyalty.

Wilson basketballs are used throughout the NCAA Tournament, the SEC Tournament, and professional leagues like the NBA and WNBA. Staley has long believed that practicing with the same ball used in the postseason gives her players a competitive advantage when championships are on the line.

Her concerns aren’t just theoretical. During the 2020-21 season, Staley publicly pointed to Nike basketballs as a factor in her guards’ struggles with ball control and turnovers, noting that the different grip and feel affected their performance despite practicing with them beforehand. The Gamecocks also experienced noticeably more turnovers in games played with Nike basketballs that season.

With another championship run in sight, South Carolina is choosing consistency over a complete equipment overhaul. While Nike now supplies the apparel, the Gamecocks are sticking with the Wilson basketball they trust—proving that sometimes the smallest detail can make the biggest difference.
