COLUMBIA — More than eight months removed from their last snap, Shane Beamer and South Carolina football are ready to move on. It’s been 251 days since the Gamecocks walked off the field to close out 2025, and with preseason practice opening this week, the program is eager to leave a disappointing 4-8 campaign firmly in the past.

A program searching for stability

That eagerness comes from a coaching tenure defined by inconsistency rather than steady progress. Beamer’s five seasons in Columbia have followed a genuine up-and-down pattern: 7-6 in 2021, a step forward to 8-5 in 2022, a sharp regression to 5-7 in 2023, a career-best 9-4 bounce-back in 2024, and then last year’s losing finish. South Carolina is banking on 2026 being the year that pendulum swings decisively back in the program’s favor, rather than continuing the alternating pattern that’s defined the Beamer era so far.

Key dates on the calendar

Preseason practice officially begins August 7, giving the Gamecocks roughly a month to prepare before their season opener against Kent State on September 5 at 12:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network, played at home in Williams-Brice Stadium.

A veteran core returns to lead the way

South Carolina brings back a meaningful group of returning starters — defined here as any player who started six or more games in 2025 — to anchor this year’s roster: quarterback LaNorris Sellers, wide receiver Nyck Harbor, tight end Brady Hunt, offensive linemen Shedrick Sarratt Jr. and Josiah Thompson, edge rusher Dylan Stewart, defensive backs Peyton Williams and Judge Collier, and linebackers Justin Okoronkwo and Fred “JayR” Johnson. That’s a genuinely experienced foundation spanning both sides of the ball heading into fall camp.

Two key injury situations remain unresolved

Not every piece of that foundation is guaranteed to be full-go from day one, though. NC State transfer offensive lineman Jacarrius Peak missed all of spring practice after injuring his knee during a team-related basketball game back in February, while star edge rusher Dylan Stewart used the spring to rest and recover from a lingering back issue rather than practice. Beamer has described both players as “on schedule” and active in the weight room, but hasn’t offered a definitive answer on what limitations, if any, either will face once practice actually begins — leaving their availability for the season opener still somewhat uncertain.

An open question at backup quarterback

With Sellers entering his third year as the starter, one notable gap remains: Beamer hasn’t named a backup quarterback, and the absence of a spring game — a casualty of ongoing Williams-Brice Stadium renovations — has made it difficult for outside observers to gauge exactly who’s leading that competition. Beamer noted back in April that Sellers and sophomore Cutter Woods handled the bulk of two-minute offense reps in practice, while junior Lucian Anderson and freshman Landon Duckworth split time with the third team — offering at least a rough hierarchy, even without a clearer public evaluation.

A retooled roster through the transfer portal

South Carolina was aggressive in the portal this offseason, bringing in reinforcements across nearly every position group. The additions include Bowling Green quarterback Lucian Anderson, running backs Christian Clark (Tennessee) and Jabree Coleman (Penn State), and a deep group of wide receivers in Nitro Tuggle (Purdue), Jayden Gibson (Oklahoma), DJ Black (UCF) and Charly Mullaly (Holy Cross).

The offensive line saw the heaviest reinforcement, with Jacarrius Peak (NC State), Emmanuel Poku (East Carolina), Carter Miller (UCF), Seth Smith (Northern Arizona), Dayne Arnett (Ferris State), Armando Nieves (New Mexico State), Hank Purvis (Purdue) and Ebubedike Nnabugwu (Missouri State) all arriving to rebuild the unit. Additional portal pickups include tight end Max Drag (UCF), defensive linemen Tomiwa Durojaiye (Illinois), Kelby Collins (Alabama) and Jordan Thomas (Georgia), edge rushers Caleb Herring (Tennessee) and Drew Collins (Arkansas State), defensive back Quay’sheed Scott (Kentucky), kicker Upton Bellenfant (Texas Tech) and long snapper Emmet Rhoades (Western Carolina).

A top-15 signing class supplements the portal work

Alongside the transfer additions, South Carolina signed 19 players in its 2026 high school recruiting class, which finished ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 8 in the SEC. That group includes edge rushers Julian Walker and Kennan Britt, defensive backs Triston Lewis, KJ Johnson, Kosci Barnes and J’Zavien Currence, linebacker Andrew Harris, defensive linemen Aiden Harris and Noah Clark, quarterback Landon Duckworth, offensive linemen Zyon Guiles, Ashton Mozone, Neff Giwa, Anthony Baxter and Darius Gray, wide receivers Sequel Patterson, Caden Ramsey and Stone Furrey, and long snapper Matthew Oh.

A schedule that offers little room to breathe

The 2026 slate doesn’t ease South Carolina into the season gently for long. After home games against Kent State (Sept. 5) and Towson (Sept. 12), the Gamecocks host Mississippi State on September 19 before a demanding stretch: a road trip to Alabama (Sept. 26), Kentucky at home (Oct. 3), a road game at Florida (Oct. 10), Tennessee at home (Oct. 24), a trip to Oklahoma (Oct. 31), Texas A&M at home (Nov. 7), a road game at Arkansas (Nov. 14), Georgia at home (Nov. 21), and the regular season finale at Clemson (Nov. 28).

What it all adds up to

Between a veteran core anchored by Sellers and Harbor, a heavily retooled roster built through an aggressive transfer portal push, and a top-15 recruiting class layered on top, South Carolina enters preseason practice with more roster investment than it’s had in recent years. Whether that translates into the bounce-back season the program is hoping for will likely hinge heavily on the health of key pieces like Peak and Stewart, along with how quickly an offensive line rebuilt almost entirely through the portal can come together before the Alabama trip arrives in late September.
