Beamer Breaks From Tradition, Names Permanent Captains Before Season Opener / sportsearchers.com

South Carolina opened its 2026 season with a 57-0 win over Kent State, and while the Gamecocks weren’t among the five SEC teams sporting corporate jersey patches, six USC players wore a ‘C’ patch designating them as permanent captains: quarterback LaNorris Sellers, tight end Brady Hunt, linebackers Fred Johnson and Shawn Murphy, and defensive backs Gerald Kilgore and Peyton Williams.

A Shift From Previous Practice

This represents a notable departure from how Shane Beamer has traditionally handled captaincy. Throughout his first five seasons, South Carolina rotated captains weekly before voting on permanent captains at season’s end, with those selected honored in the program’s hall of captains — a tradition dating back to the 1800s. Last December’s awards banquet, for example, named Sellers, Luke Doty, Nick Barrett, Bryan Thomas Jr., and Jalon Kilgore as the 2025 permanent captains.

Why the Change

Beamer explained his reasoning centered on the makeup of this year’s roster: “I’ve really been thinking about it throughout the offseason, if I wanted to do this or not. The primary reason is I just feel like this team is, as I told you guys, older, more mature. I had a pretty good idea how the captain vote would go because we have so many. I knew we would have a lot of guys that would get votes.”

According to Beamer, more than a dozen players received over 10 votes in the preseason selection process — what he called “a really high number.” He made a point of personally meeting with every player who earned double-digit votes but wasn’t named a permanent captain, telling them: “You’re not silenced now. Continue to lead.”

The Reasoning Behind Waiting in Past Years

Beamer has generally believed leadership develops over the course of a season — a philosophy that shaped his approach early in his tenure, giving transfers like Spencer Rattler, Nick Gargiulo, and Demetrius Knight time to develop before earning captaincy. But that patience didn’t pay off in 2025. Beamer was candid that the team lacked leadership last season, a shortfall that showed up in several blown leads throughout the year, with no player stepping up to fill the void.

Clear Expectations for This Year’s Captains

In naming this year’s six captains upfront, Beamer made their responsibility explicit from the start: “Well, I’m telling you guys right now, you’re being named a captain so it’s your job to lead. So if people say we have a lack of leadership, we don’t talk about the group. We talk about the leaders on this team.”

Room for Change Down the Road

The traditional end-of-season vote will still take place. If a player outside the current six earns a large share of votes and Beamer sees it fit, that player could be added to the hall of captains. Conversely, any of the current captains could lose their status if they don’t perform in the role: “(then) he’s obviously done a crap job of leading the team this year,” Beamer said, “and he may not be a captain permanently.”

For now, though, Beamer is fully behind his chosen group: “I like the group that they chose, and those guys take a lot of pride and ownership in that. (Naming permanent captains was) really just more to just signify here’s our leaders, and let’s go play ball.”
