Beamer’s Bye-Week Briefing After the Florida Win
A day after South Carolina’s 38-19 win at Florida, head coach Shane Beamer used his Sunday press conference to review the result, update injuries, lay out the bye-week plan, and praise several players. He called it a “great road win” in one of the country’s hardest venues, and described it as a game defined by response.
A Game of Responses
Beamer pointed to the team’s resilience after falling behind early:
“It was a game of responses, and that was huge by us.”
The Gamecocks answered a 7-0 deficit with a touchdown, answered again after falling behind 10-7, and scored right back after giving up points on the opening drive of the third quarter.
The Turnover Margin
Beamer said the turnover margin was “huge” and compared it to a past trip to Oklahoma, when South Carolina followed a turnover-heavy loss at Alabama by forcing three first-quarter turnovers. He said he hoped Saturday would play out the same way, and it did.
Injuries and Schedule
Players who missed the game or left it, including Judge Collier, are all expected back for Tennessee. The one real concern is Quay’sheed Scott, whose availability depends on testing this week.
The bye-week plan:
- Sunday: Players and coaches get the day off.
- Monday: Staff meets at 7 a.m., then players review the film.
- Tuesday and Wednesday: Practice.
- Thursday to Saturday: Players get three days off, which lines up with fall break. Beamer said players “need a break” in a long season with only one bye.
- Thursday and Friday: Coaches go recruiting, hoping the Florida win adds momentum for the 2027 class.
He also said the team will head into six straight games, five of them in the SEC, followed by Clemson. He congratulated former Gamecock John Abraham, who was being inducted into the Falcons’ Ring of Honor, and thanked fans who traveled to Gainesville.
The Empty-Stadium Message
Beamer said he showed players a photo of Florida’s empty stadium on Tuesday, with a challenge: make the stadium empty by the fourth quarter except for garnet and black. That is how the game ended.
Defense: Proud, Not Surprised
Asked about the defense playing so well while shorthanded, Beamer said he was proud but not surprised, because the problems on tape were simple: no turnovers and too many big plays. The message to the group was to be “great with their eyes.” He praised their effort and strain to the ball, but also listed things to fix, including wrong coverage techniques, misalignments up front and unexecuted pressures. Offense and special teams also left plenty to clean up.
Dylan Stewart’s Return
Beamer said Stewart “was awesome throughout the game,” playing the run well as well as the pass. He had warned Stewart that Florida might try to provoke him and that the tape showed he needed to handle his emotions. Stewart did.
The off-field detail stood out most: academic staff told Beamer that Stewart had his best week academically since arriving at South Carolina. Beamer said that “says everything to me.”
On why Stewart was first off the bus, Beamer said he hadn’t planned it and didn’t even realize it, but liked that Stewart was eager to get into the locker room. He added that Stewart’s earlier frustration came from not feeling healthy, and that his presence makes Anthony Addison, George Wilson and Caleb Herring better because of the attention he draws. Beamer expects an even better Stewart against Tennessee.
Sellers, Bennett and Harbor: “Brothers”
On the sideline flare-up between LaNorris Sellers and Mazeo Bennett, Beamer said it reflects the culture of “a bunch of brothers.” He loves the fire, and said teammates can challenge each other without things fracturing. He also described challenging Nyck Harbor after a deep ball, then Harbor challenging him back after a touchdown catch. On the flight home, Beamer told him he’d keep pushing him, and Harbor replied, “Let’s go.”
Receiver Depth
- Donovan Murph: His ability to play inside and outside adds flexibility, especially after the loss of Jayden Sellers at slot.
- Sequel Patterson: Still developing, and the bye week should help.
- Lex Cyrus: He worked hard on the scout team last year, practices the right way, and got more snaps because the Gamecocks controlled the game. Beamer wants to tap into his speed and big-play ability.
Beamer said developing depth at receiver and other positions will be a staff-meeting priority.
Superstitions and Perspective
In a lighter moment, Beamer joked that Hunter’s cast cannot come off, and noted South Carolina is 2-0 on SEC road games when Emily and Sutton don’t travel.
Asked how today’s pressure compares with his father Frank Beamer’s era, he shared his father’s lesson:
“Things are never as good as they seem. Things are never as bad as they seem.”
He said Virginia Tech struggled through much of his childhood, but fans then had to write letters or call, with no social media.
Conclusion
Beamer’s message was enjoy the win, but keep improving. With a bye week, a healthier roster and a six-game stretch ahead, the staff will use the break to build depth and fix recurring mistakes.
