The Latest Commitment: GG Banks

On Saturday, five-star point guard Jezelle “GG” Banks committed to South Carolina, choosing the Gamecocks over Texas and LSU. She is the second-ranked point guard and third-ranked overall prospect in the 2027 class by On3. She fills the biggest hole on the roster, because Maddy McDaniel left in August, leaving Staley without a true point guard for 2026-27.

The Full Count: 2026-27 Newcomers

Staley’s 2026 haul was built from several channels:

  • Kelsi Andrews and Kaeli Wynn, the first two signees of the class, both post players.
  • Jerzy Robinson, the top-ranked prospect who signed in the spring.
  • Oliviyah Edwards, the No. 5 recruit in 2026 by 247Sports and a former Tennessee commit.
  • Justine Loubens, a 6-1 forward from France who joined on April 29.
  • Jordan Lee, a McDonald’s All-American who was Texas’s second-leading scorer, via the portal.
  • Brooke Quarles Daniels, a fifth-year point guard from Michigan who signed Aug. 28.

That is seven newcomers. ESPN ranked the freshman group No. 2 nationally.

The 2027 Class So Far

  1. Taylor Brown (Oct. 3): the four-star guard picked Carolina over Tennessee and North Carolina.
  2. GG Banks (Oct. 10): five-star point guard.

Staley is still involved with guard Ashley MacCalla and post Zaniya Johnson, and five-star wing Jordyn Palmer visited alongside Banks and Brown. Across both cycles, that’s nine additions, with more possible.

What Staley Tells Recruits

Her pitch isn’t built on the recruiting-visit glamor. In her words, “everybody’s good on the good days.” She tells recruits the red carpet is standard everywhere, and the real question is who gets you back on course in a slump, or after a personal loss.

Recruits’ words echo this:

  • Banks: “They recruited me as a person,” and they were honest about what it takes to reach her goals.
  • Oliviyah Edwards: “it felt like home,” and she chose Carolina after first committing to Tennessee.

The recruiting analysis points to a few consistent drivers:

  • Honesty over hype: Staley tells recruits what they must do to get on the floor.
  • Trust as the selling point: She sells her staff as the people who stay when things go badly.
  • Winning: The Gamecocks have reached eight Final Fours, including 2025 and 2026 as runner-up.
  • Big stages: She uses Williams-Brice Stadium game days as a recruiting tool.
  • Clear roles: Staley often has freshman guards play off the ball early to learn.

Is Anyone Else Doing This?

I couldn’t find a verified national record for most commitments in a cycle, so I won’t claim Staley holds one. The comparison data I found:

  • Texas had the No. 1 class in 2026, but its 2027 class has one commitment so far (Jayla Forbes).
  • LSU has Caroline Bradley, the top-rated post.
  • UCLA has Finley Parcher and Ginny Anne Dumont, and won the 2026 title.

The difference is volume combined with quality across several channels in the same year. Few programs add high school stars, an international prospect, a top portal guard and a fifth-year transfer in one cycle.

What the Deep Roster Means

The upside:

  • Position balance: Banks and Brown fix the point guard shortage.
  • Development time: Younger players can learn behind veterans.
  • Resilience: Depth helps through injuries and WNBA departures.

The caveats:

  • Roster spots are limited. Staley usually keeps 12-13 players rather than the full 15, and the 2027 class has only three or four spots, so not every target will fit.
  • Playing time is competitive. Elite recruits can leave if minutes are tight, as the program’s recent portal losses show.
  • The title drought: UCLA beat South Carolina for the 2026 championship, so depth still has to produce a trophy.

Outlook

If Staley adds one or two more from Palmer, MacCalla or Johnson, Carolina should stay in the top tier for years. The case is stronger than a one-year surge: stable guard play, a flexible frontcourt and recruits who chose the program for relationships as well as results. The challenge is turning that talent into the national title that has slipped away the last two Aprils. 🤙
