It hurts. Beamer Insists This Team Won’t Be Defined by One Night
Despite the disappointment, Beamer pushed back on letting the result shape the broader narrative around his team: “Certainly, really, really disappointing with us and how we performed overall tonight. Just told the team this moment won’t define this football team… You’re going to try and define this team based on what has happened tonight, and that’s not the case. We’ll be defined, this team will, by how we respond from this night… As ugly as it what, and as disappointing as tonight was there’s a lot of really good that I saw out there.”
Breaking Down the Second-Half Collapse
South Carolina led 23-14 at halftime, but the game unraveled entirely in the third quarter. Beamer described the shift bluntly: “Felt like we were just fighting an uphill battle there in the third quarter.” Mississippi State outscored South Carolina 17-0 in the third quarter, taking a 38-23 lead just a minute into the fourth. Overall, USC was outscored 27-11 in the second half. Beamer emphasized how much the team has prioritized finishing games: “We work way too hard and emphasize it way too much, to not play better in the second half like we did. We’ve talked about it all year. That in this league, man, it’s a four quarter game every week.”
Addressing Comparisons to Last Season’s Struggles
Asked whether 2025’s late-game collapses might be resurfacing, Beamer reiterated his belief in the current roster’s identity: “It’s a completely different team. There’s a lot of guys that weren’t even here last year… This is a completely different team with unbelievable leadership. I know they’ll respond the right way.”
A Rough Outing for LaNorris Sellers
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers struggled at key moments, throwing two interceptions — now the third multi-interception game of his career, following similar performances against Ole Miss and Clemson last season. He finished 25-of-40 for 282 yards and two touchdowns, and did help put South Carolina in position for a late comeback attempt. Beamer’s assessment of his quarterback was measured: “Just keep getting better, like everybody. Got some throws that he’d like to have back tonight. We all need to be better. We’ve got to make better throws there, but there’s a lot that goes into it: protection, route running. Give their guys credit. They had some nice calls on defense and they were in a position to make plays.”
A Bright Spot: Malik Orsan’s Kicking Performance
Amid the loss, one clear positive emerged — newly named starting kicker Malik Orsan, who hadn’t attempted a college field goal before Saturday, made all four of his attempts, including two from beyond 50 yards. Beamer explained the decision to start him: “Malik had a really good week of practice and was more consistent this week in practice, and just felt like we needed to do that going into this game. Heck of a job by Malik to come out there and kick whatever it was. I wish he hadn’t, but kick four field goals and make two 50-plus yarders. And then that field goal right there on the last drive was big time… Felt good about putting him out there. And he answered the call.”
