South Carolina softball will return to one of the sport’s premier early-season showcases next year, with the program officially added to the field for the 2027 Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational. ESPN unveiled the full lineup on Thursday, confirming the Gamecocks as part of an 11-team field that also includes Clemson, Florida State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Washington, Virginia Tech, East Carolina, UCF, and Liberty.

The timing lines up with a pivotal moment for the program. Head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard enters her third season at the helm with a roster full of new pieces, and rather than easing that group into the year, she’s chosen to throw them straight into one of the toughest early-season gauntlets in college softball. It’s a scheduling philosophy that has defined her tenure so far — Woodard has consistently prioritized difficult competition over a soft opening slate, betting that early adversity pays off later in the season.

Set for February 18-21 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Florida, the tournament will have South Carolina playing five games across four days. Pairings against the other ten teams haven’t been released yet, leaving the specific matchups a mystery for now.

For the Gamecocks, the trip carries some historical weight. This marks just the second appearance in program history at the Clearwater event, and the first since 2020 — a seven-year gap that makes the return notable in its own right. The 2027 edition will also be a milestone for the tournament itself, marking the eighth consecutive year that the City of Clearwater and ESPN Events have partnered to host the invitational, which has grown into one of the sport’s most attended early-season gatherings.

Beyond the sporting stakes, the event carries a charitable component tied to its title sponsor, Shriners Children’s, a detail that has helped the tournament build its reputation beyond just the competition on the field.

Logistics for the weekend are still being finalized. According to South Carolina’s athletics department, the full game schedule will be released this fall, with ticket sales opening shortly after. Fans interested in attending are encouraged to act early once tickets go live, and additional details can be found at www.clearwaterinvitational.com.

With a new-look roster and a challenging non-conference slate on the horizon, Clearwater could end up being an early proving ground — the first real indicator of how Woodard’s rebuilt group handles pressure before Southeastern Conference play begins in earnest.
