Tournebize’s World Cup Dream Put on Hold by Finger Injury

A finger injury has apparently ended Alicia Tournebize’s chances of playing in this year’s World Cup before it even begins. The French National Team confirmed Saturday morning that the South Carolina forward was hurt during training camp ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, which tips off September 4 in Berlin and runs through September 13.

The federation’s official statement, translated from French, read: “Alicia Tournebize is leaving the preparation of the French women’s team for the 2026 World Cup. Having injured a finger in training, the South Carolina (NCAA) forward underwent medical examinations this Friday at INSEP, which confirmed an unavailability for several weeks.” Neither which hand was affected nor the specific nature of the injury was disclosed in the release.

Given that timeline, the math doesn’t work in Tournebize’s favor — a multi-week recovery window essentially rules her out of Berlin entirely, even though France stopped short of confirming that outright.

More pressing for South Carolina fans is what this means for her availability in Columbia. USC hadn’t issued a statement on the injury as of early Saturday, leaving open questions about whether the timeline for her recovery could bump up against the start of the Gamecocks’ own season. South Carolina typically opens practice in late September, and the program already has an outdoor exhibition scheduled for September 27 — a date that could be in jeopardy for Tournebize depending on how quickly she heals. The bigger cushion comes from the regular-season opener, which doesn’t arrive until November 2, when the Gamecocks face Maryland in Paris.

That gap between now and November gives Tournebize a realistic runway to recover before games that actually count for South Carolina begin, even if her summer international window closes early.

For a player still establishing her role in Dawn Staley’s rotation, the timing is unfortunate but not necessarily costly long-term. Tournebize is entering her sophomore season after joining the Gamecocks midyear last January and appearing in 20 games as a freshman, averaging 4 points and 3.4 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per outing. A World Cup snub would sting, but it likely won’t derail the on-court development she’s shown flashes of in Columbia.
